Gundersheim: Hiking, Cross-Country Skiing and Roman Finds
Accommodation in Gundersheim
For a stay in Gundersheim, hiking, cross-country skiing and Roman history offer different options to focus on. The hiking trails vary in walking time and route; a hiking trail starts at the Gundersheim Gailbrücke, which is also named as an access point for a cross-country ski trail. A Roman structure was also discovered between Gundersheim and Reisach.
Hiking: Walking Times and Trail Characteristics
The Hennebergweg is a historic hiking trail in the Naturarena Kärnten and starts in Gundersheim. Its first section runs from Griminitzen to the Gundersheimer Alm; this part is called the Koflweg and has been made passable again. The Hennebergweg from Gundersheim to the Gundersheimer Alm takes about two hours. This approximate time provides a longer planning timeframe for the route to the alm.
The shaded Ebenwaldweg is shorter, with an estimated walking time of about 30 to 60 minutes. It runs between Grafendorf, Gundersheim and Reißkofelbadstraße. Compared with the roughly two hours to the Gundersheimer Alm, its timeframe is shorter; the times refer to different trails. In addition to walking time, its shaded character is another feature you can use to guide your choice.
A third option is a flat walk along the banks of the Gail, west of Gundersheim or Griminitzen, to the Nölblinger Steg. Unlike the two trails with stated walking times, the focus here is on the flat riverside route. When planning, you can therefore choose between a longer hike to the Gundersheimer Alm, a shaded trail with a shorter stated time, and a flat riverside walk.
Roman Finds Between Gundersheim and Reisach
A Roman structure was discovered between Gundersheim and Reisach. It is thought to be up to 2,000 years old and is known as a Villa Rustica. Excavations revealed a drinking well, remains of underfloor heating and parts of the façade design. The finds concern different parts of the structure: its water supply, heating and façade design. The site therefore offers specific architectural details as well as a cautious estimate of its age.
Cross-Country Skiing and Getting Your Bearings at the Gailbrücke
The Obergailtaler Panoramaloipe (Classic u. Skating) XC_N2 is a moderately difficult cross-country ski route measuring 35.9 kilometres. The Gundersheim Gailbrücke is listed as an access point for the trail. The Gundersheim-Grafendorf WY_N16 hiking trail also starts at the same bridge. The distinction is useful for finding your way: the Gailbrücke is the starting point for the hiking route and an access point for the ski trail. Possible access points may depend on snow conditions, so check these before planning your trip.
A Dated Nature Day
On 14 June 2026, the Naturfreunde held a nature day for children and adults at the Kraftplatz by the Gailbrücke in Gundersheim.
