Hermagor-Pressegger See lies in the lower Gail Valley, near the border with Italy and where the Gitsch Valley joins the Gail Valley. The Carnic Alps bound the landscape to the south, and the Gailtal Alps to the north. The lake, valley and mountain scenery offer different themes for a trip: nature at Lake Pressegger See, trails with their own distinct character, and regional history.

Lake Pressegger See: Shores, Nature and Reed Trails

Lake Pressegger See lies in a nature reserve. Rare plants, twelve fish species, crayfish, and numerous birds and dragonflies can be found there. The water also shapes the character of the lake: thanks to the strong inflow from its two springs, it is completely renewed every two weeks. In midsummer, Lake Pressegger See can reach a water temperature of up to 28 °C.

The Hermagor lido has a large sunbathing lawn and a shallow pebble beach. BoulderROCK, an outdoor bouldering cube, is also located by the lake. The puzzle trail around Lake Pressegger See starts at the Hermagor lido; its starting point is the Fix & Foxi adventure playground, “In the Realm of the Lake Witch.” The sunbathing lawn and pebble beach describe the shoreline, while the bouldering cube and puzzle trail offer other ways to engage with the lake’s surroundings.

The Slow Trail around Lake Pressegger See starts at the Hermagor lido and is around six kilometres long. The Slow Trail “Path Through the Reeds” offers a different focus: it runs through a dense belt of reeds that leaves room for only a narrow path. From the steep bank, this trail offers views of the characteristic peaks of the Carnic Alps and the Nassfeld area. For a geological perspective on the landscape, the Garnitzenklamm Geotrail follows emerald-green, rushing streams and passes colourful rock formations and cliffs.

Trails with Different Themes

The Nassfeld Historical Mile runs from the national border to Watschiger Alm and returns via the sulphur spring. Along the way, it presents botanical and geological features as well as the area’s history, with a focus on the First World War. As a themed trail, it explores the history of the border region along the Carnic Main Ridge. Nature observations and historical context come together here, without one replacing the other.

The Way of the Book also provides guidance through specific route points: the tenth stage, from Hermagor to Nötsch, begins at the Protestant church in Hermagor. From Khünburg towards the Mother of God Rock, this stage follows a gently rising forest road and offers views of Lake Pressegger See and the Carnic Alps. For cyclists, the Gailtal Cycle Route passes directly by Lake Pressegger See. It is 90 kilometres long in total and runs from Kötschach to Villach.

The Three Lakes Loop runs from Lake Pressegger See via Lake Farchtensee and Lake WeiĂźensee through the Gitsch Valley and back to Lake Pressegger See. It can be shortened at numerous points; in some places, it is also possible to return by public transport. The routes therefore provide different planning details: the Gailtal Cycle Route has a stated total distance and endpoints, while the Three Lakes Loop lists the sequence of lakes as well as possible shortcuts and return journeys.

History and Regional Culture

The Gailtal Local History Museum is housed in Möderndorf Castle near Hermagor. It contains more than 5,000 artefacts from the Georg Essl collection. Its themes range from palaeontology and archaeology to regional folk and everyday culture. This makes the museum a place to explore the region’s history from different perspectives: from traces of early life to the objects and customs of everyday life.

The Gothic Chapel of St. Urbani is a striking combination of architecture and landscape. It dates from the early 16th century and stands on a rock rising steeply from Garnitzenklamm. Those interested in the history of Hermagor and its surroundings over several centuries can explore this theme on a guided walk through the old town. The 2026 programme details, including dates and booking conditions, may change.

Regional Specialities and Winter Slopes

The Lake Loop is a culinary-themed circular hiking trail from the centre of the Wulfeniastadt, over the hills around Hermagor, to Lake Pressegger See. Regional products are also part of the local culinary scene: products from the Tressdorfer Alm dairy include Gailtaler Almkäse PDO, Schotten cheese, alpine butter, soft cheese and semi-hard cheese. Their availability may vary by season.

The Nassfeld ski area offers another theme, with more than 40 different pistes, ranging from sporty to family-friendly runs. Alongside lakeside and nature trails, there is a choice of slopes with different characteristics. Depending on whether your main interests are landscapes, regional history, food or downhill skiing, these themes can shape the focus of your trip planning.
