Accommodation in Stadtschlaining
Stadtschlaining lies amid the forested landscapes of southern Burgenland. For travellers looking for a hotel in Stadtschlaining, the destination’s character is shaped by the history of its castle and town, Jewish heritage and a varied cultural programme. The surviving sections of the former town walls, Schlaining Castle and the former synagogue point to different aspects of the town’s history. Which of these you focus on can shape your stay.
Castle and town history
Large sections of Stadtschlaining’s former town walls are well preserved. Two exhibitions at the castle focus on different aspects of its history: the exhibition on the castle’s history explores its history and architecture, weapons, and life in a medieval castle. “From Defensive Castle to Peace Castle,” by contrast, traces the development of the medieval fortification into a modern peace centre. This allows you to explore the building, its defensive role and life at the castle, as well as its transformation into a peace centre.
The former Stadtschlaining Synagogue is a place of remembrance and education that honours the cultural diversity and history of the Jewish people. The exhibition “Searching for Traces: Fragments of Jewish Life in Burgenland” tells the story of Jewish life in the region. It thus complements the themes of the castle and town with another perspective on the history of Burgenland.
Culture, mills and mining
The KLANGfestival offers a varied cultural and musical programme in Stadtschlaining and at Schlaining Castle, featuring national and international artists as well as extraordinary performances. The festival is connected both to the town and to the castle.
The focus at Sagmeister Mill is on milling technology: it is located on the Tauchenbach, and its so-called Francis turbine still drives the mill wheels. The Goberling Mining Museum preserves the last remnants of mining tools and other mining memorabilia in the former Goberling cooling house. Advance registration is required for guided visits. The mill and museum thus offer insights into different working worlds and technical heritage from the region.
Regional offerings at the castle
In the wine cellar at Schlaining Castle, the Vinothek Burgenland wine shop offers wines from all six wine-growing regions of Burgenland. Check the current opening hours before your visit. The castle shop stocks regional snacks, blue-dyed textiles, amber jewellery and peace-themed products. The selection may change; if you are interested in a particular product, check the latest information in advance.
Routes and getting there
The sixth stage of the Jubilee Cycle Route runs from Lockenhaus to Stadtschlaining. The Peace Circular Trail leads into the medieval town and to Schlaining Peace Castle. The routes have different focuses: the cycling stage connects the two named places, while the Peace Circular Trail takes you to the town and the castle.
Travel information published for May 2024 lists bus connections to Oberwart, where you change to route 85. From the Stadtschlaining Hauptplatz stop, it is about a two-minute walk to the castle.
