Schützen Am Gebirge is the last village on the Wulka before it flows into Lake Neusiedl. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on the landscape and trails or on historic buildings in the village.

Landscape and Protected Areas

The part of the municipal area south of the village belongs to the Lake Neusiedl UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Lake Neusiedl European protected area. At 224 metres above sea level, the Goldberg near Schützen Am Gebirge is the highest elevation in the Rust Hills. Limestone rocks emerge on its upper slopes, where small areas of dry grassland can be found. The Goldberg is also a refuge for dry grassland flora and its associated fauna.

Trails and Views

The 7-metre-high Skywalk is located on the Goldberg near Schützen Am Gebirge. It offers views of Schützen, the Leitha Mountains, Eisenstadt and Donnerskirchen. The Schützen Süd circular trail runs through and around the village, passing the UNESCO observation tower, the viewing platform and the Goldberg rest area. Check the latest route information before setting off, as trail conditions can change.

For a different kind of route planning, the R 1 – Jubiläumsradweg cycle path connects to the state capital and the Lake Neusiedl Cycle Route. Schützen Süd is a circular trail through and around the village; the R 1 connects to two cycling destinations. This distinction can help you decide whether you are looking for a loop around the village or a cycle route with the connections mentioned. The Oslip–Schützen Am Gebirge–Oggau (OSO) route network region can be reached by train via stops in Schützen Am Gebirge. Check the timetable for your travel date.

Village Character and Historic Buildings

The parish church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Schützen Am Gebirge has a Baroque west façade and is surrounded by a defensive wall. The village also features partly preserved ensembles of gabled houses from the original narrow green village. Schützen Am Gebirge is well suited to a village visit, with these ensembles offering a specific point of reference for viewing the historic buildings.

The Rosalia Chapel, also called the Brandl Chapel, lies southeast of Schützen Am Gebirge. It was built in honour of Saint Rosalia after the plague epidemic of 1713. The Ecce Homo wayside shrine on Margarethenerstraße is the oldest wayside shrine in the municipality of Schützen and is dated to 1623. The Holy Trinity monument, also called the Trinity Column, is located on the road to Oggau and was erected by the Thurner family in 1869. The dates mark different historical references: the wayside shrine is dated to 1623, the chapel is associated with the plague epidemic of 1713, and the column was erected in 1869.

The former village mill, known as the Lehner Mill, is also among the historically significant buildings. The Federal Monuments Authority’s list of protected monuments dated 19 June 2026 lists it at Ruster Straße 4 as a protected monument; the registry entry is not legally binding.
