Wodonga offers travellers both waterside trails and natural spaces, as well as a varied cultural scene.

Waterside Trails and Gateway Island

The Gateway Island Trail is a 4.3-kilometre paved path along the Murray River and Wodonga Creek. The trail features sculptures by local Aboriginal artists. In the natural landscape, with its eucalyptus trees, you may spot platypuses, wallabies, antechinus, water rats, wedge-tailed eagles, kangaroos, bats and spoonbills. The path is accessible from Gateway Village; its starting point is behind The Lincoln, 64 Lincoln Causeway, on Gateway Island.

The Crossing Place Trail is located at Gateway Lakes on Gateway Island in Wodonga. It is near the Murray River’s original crossing places at its confluences with Bungambrawatha Creek and Oddies Creek. This offers another connection to the area’s waterways, with its own focus on the former crossing places.

Theatre, Gallery and Hyphen

At Gateway Village, HotHouse Theatre presents a range of live performances in an intimate setting. You can often meet the actors afterwards. Gateway Gallery offers a different focus: it showcases contemporary works by more than 50 regional artists. These include paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, photography, textiles and jewellery. The same venue thus brings together performing arts and a broad selection of visual and craft-based forms of expression.

Hyphen is in Wodonga’s cultural precinct at 126 Hovell St. The building is fully accessible, with two lifts serving both floors. If accessibility is important for your visit, you can check the latest information in advance.

Green Spaces and Play Areas

Belvoir Park has a lake with numerous waterbirds and is set within a large, open green space with mature trees. Two playground areas add to the park. One is a multigenerational playground with raised platforms, decks, slides, nets, a climbing wall and a Liberty swing. If your plans depend on specific playground features, check the current facilities before visiting, as they may change.

Cycling, Walking and Nature Watching

Wodonga has more than 80 kilometres of trails for leisurely cycling or challenging walks. These are two different ways to enjoy the trails: a relaxed bike ride or a more demanding walk. Horse riding is another option on the High Country Rail Trail; the entire trail can be travelled by bike or on horseback. One section runs from Wodonga to Old Tallangatta along the shore of Lake Hume.

A chain of nature reserves stretches from Wodonga’s southern outskirts through Leneva and Baranduda, offering opportunities for walking and cycling. Wodonga’s nature reserves are also suitable for wildlife watching and photography, with wildlife, birds, flowers and plants to see or capture. Together with the landscape along the Gateway Island Trail, they offer a choice between waterside wildlife watching, trails through nature reserves and longer recreational routes.
