Ararat offers a range of ways to shape your stay: collection displays, cultural and local history, gardens and views. Each place has its own focus. You can plan your trip around the topics that interest you, rather than treating every attraction as the same kind of visit. Choosing a theme can help clarify the purpose of your stay when searching for a hotel in Ararat.

Art and Collections

Ararat Gallery TAMA has three exhibition spaces for its collections. Its collection displays therefore offer a distinct point of interest, which you can set apart from the historical themes of other institutions. For wheelchair access, approach from the eastern side of the footpath on Vincent Street, via a gentle slope. You can take this specific access route into account when planning your visit.

Cultural and Local History

The Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre tells the story of Ararat as Australia’s only town founded by Chinese people. It also shows the influence of Chinese culture on Australia’s economic, cultural and social development. Its focus thus ranges from the town’s origins to a broader view of Australia’s development.

J Ward offers a different historical perspective: the museum complex is located in the original prison grounds and is dedicated to documenting and preserving their history. Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour, so plan J Ward as a guided activity. Compared with Gum San, the focus here is on a specific historic site, while Gum San connects Ararat’s origins with the history of Chinese culture in Australia.

Langi Morgala Museum displays photographs, dressed models, clothing and agricultural machinery reflecting the 1856 gold rush. It also presents the Mooney and Charles Best collections of Aboriginal cultural artefacts. The focus here is therefore on both objects connected with the gold rush and the two named collections. Unlike Gum San, its emphasis is on these collections and the 1856 gold rush.

Gardens and Views

Alexandra Gardens has lakeside paths, barbecue and picnic areas, colourful flower beds, and terraced lawns that slope down to an ornamental pond. The character of the gardens comes from these varied features: paths and places to relax sit alongside landscaped planting and tiered lawns. This offers a different focus from the museums’ collections and history.

The lookout at One Tree Hill offers views across Ararat and the surrounding landscape. Unlike Alexandra Gardens, the view here takes in the town and the landscape around it. The lookout is accessible by car, bicycle or on foot.
