Upwey: Nature, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Upwey
You can discover Upwey through a range of interests: its local history spans the former name “Mast Gully” and the naming of Upwey railway station. Glenfern Valley Bushlands features trails, loop walks and wildlife, alongside the cultural offerings of Burrinja Cultural Centre and the Upwey Community Market. If you’re looking for a hotel in Upwey, these themes can help you decide on a destination. First, consider whether local history, nature trails, art and performances, or a visit to the market will shape your stay.
Local history and traces of the past
Upwey was originally known as “Mast Gully”. The name comes from several ship masts being felled there in the 1850s. Another trace of the area’s naming dates to 1897: the Tullidge sisters bought a homestead and named it after the English village of “Upwey on the River Wey”. The homestead and the town are distinct points of reference in this history. When the narrow-gauge railway from Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook opened in 1900, a station called Upwey was built along the line; the name was adopted locally. The naming history therefore connects three specific details: the felling of the masts, the homestead named after the English village, and the station on the railway line. These dates relate to different events: the masts were felled in the 1850s, the homestead was bought in 1897, and the railway opened in 1900.
Trails and wildlife in Glenfern Valley Bushlands
At Glenfern Valley Bushlands, you can explore the 100 acres on foot, either on a large loop walk or a figure-eight route. Several trails are connected, and some are steep. These two route types offer different ways to explore the trail network; factor the slopes into your plans. Also check current trail conditions before your visit.
The bushland is also of interest for its wildlife. Animals found there include koalas, many bird species and butterflies. Together with the different trail options, this gives you two distinct nature-related considerations for planning your trip: choosing a route and exploring the area’s wildlife. The animals mentioned are examples, not a complete species list.
Culture and the market
Burrinja Cultural Centre offers visual art, original theatre, live comedy and live music. Its cultural program ranges from visual art to performances and music. If you’d like to include culture in your trip plans, you can consider these different forms. Specific performances and exhibitions vary, so check what’s on during your planned stay.
The Upwey Community Market offers fresh produce, baked goods and food, as well as dog treats, plants, knick-knacks and a wide selection of handmade goods. Its range brings together food, plants, small market items and handmade products. What’s available may vary between market days, and individual stalls may not offer the same products at every market. If you’re planning a visit to find a particular item, check what’s available on the day.
