In Mokepilly, it is worth distinguishing local destinations from nearby excursion spots. Fishing on Mt William Creek, activities and trails at Lake Fyans, and a cycling loop that starts and ends in Halls Gap each offer a different focus.

Water and recreation

Lake Fyans is near Mokepilly and is one of the region’s main recreational lakes. Visitors go sailing, jet skiing, hunting and caravanning there; you can also swim and water-ski. Mt William Creek near Mokepilly is a fishing spot. The difference is therefore not simply that these are two bodies of water: fishing is the specific draw at the creek, while the lake offers several recreational activities. If you are planning an outing by the water, bear in mind that the lake is outside the town, and check current local conditions.

Trails and cycling

A 9.6 km walking trail runs along the shore of Lake Fyans. Shorter trails take in the plant life as well as nature and birdwatching paths. This gives you two different ways to explore the lake on foot: a longer route along the shore and shorter trails focused on nature observation. If you are choosing mainly by trail length, you can consider the lakeside trail; if you would like to include plants and birds, the shorter trails cover these themes. Check current trail conditions before setting out for a walk.

The Lake Fyans Loop is an easy 37 km cycling circuit that starts and ends in Halls Gap. One 7 km section follows Lake Fyans and Mokepilly Road; the return leg follows a 12 km cycling section on Grampians Road back to Halls Gap. Halls Gap has cafés. Compared with the 9.6 km lakeside trail, the loop is longer and is described as a cycling route; distance and mode of transport offer two concrete ways to choose between them. The 7 km and 12 km refer to sections of the 37 km loop, not additional complete routes. Check road conditions before riding.

Roads and location planning

Mokepilly can also be understood through specific road sections. In the 2021 road register, sections of Mokepilly Road from Grampians Road to Cool Waters Road are classified as sealed rural collector roads. Williams Lane runs from Mount Dryden Road to Mokepilly Road and is, in sections, an unsealed rural access road for residential areas. The surfaces and road functions of the two sections therefore differ. Check current road conditions before making a specific trip.

Lake Fyans is nearby; Halls Gap is part of the wider region.
