These topics can help you get a sense of Howqua based on the focus of your trip before comparing specific hotel offers.

River Landscapes, Culture and Wildlife

The landscape of the Howqua Hills Historic Area was traditionally used by the Taungurung and is culturally significant to Aboriginal Peoples. Visitors can spot wombats, lyrebirds, platypuses, kangaroos and wallabies there. Cultural significance and wildlife viewing offer two distinct perspectives on Howqua alongside its river landscape.

Traces of Gold Mining

The Howqua Hills Historic Area in Howqua was once frequented by many gold prospectors. The Howqua Hills Heritage Walk passes an old brick chimney and a smelting furnace; both were built in 1884. Another built feature is the 100-metre-long tunnel at Tunnel Bend. It was built in 1884 to connect the Howqua River with a four-kilometre-long hand-dug water race. Fred Fry, known as Master Bushman, built his home at Fry's Hut in the early 1940s. These features served different purposes: the chimney and smelting furnace are part of the built history of gold mining, while the tunnel was used to convey water; Fry's Hut adds a later dwelling to this technical perspective. The tunnel is much shorter than the hand-dug water race: 100 metres compared with a length of four kilometres.

Walking Trails and Seasonal Activities

The Howqua Hills Heritage Walk is a four-kilometre Grade 3 loop between Sheepyard Flat and Frys Flat; the stated duration is 1.5 hours. The duration gives a time frame, while the length and difficulty grade describe other aspects of the walk. You can therefore consider the time required and the grading separately when planning.

The High Track provides access to numerous flats along the Howqua River and runs from the Howqua Hills Historic Area into Alpine National Park. By comparison, the Heritage Walk is a loop between two named flats; the High Track focuses on the flats along the river and its route into the national park. The two trails therefore differ mainly in their routes. Horse riding in the Howqua Hills Historic Area is available seasonally from November to May. If horse riding is important to your trip, take this time frame into account when planning.

Camping and Hotel Planning

Camping on the nine flats in the Howqua Hills Historic Area is free and includes basic facilities, including pit toilets. The camping areas are accessible to two-wheel-drive vehicles, including motorhomes and caravans. If you are considering camping as an accommodation option, you can take costs, facilities and vehicle access into account when planning.
