Anglesea combines coastal scenery with nature and cultural offerings. When choosing where to stay, the town has more to offer than just the beach: there are swimming areas and paths at the river mouth, while the heathland, lookout, gallery and events reveal other sides of the town.

Beach and River Scenery

The main beach is a wide expanse of sand beside the Anglesea River. At Anglesea Beach, at the river mouth, there are sheltered swimming areas. Anglesea Surf Beach offers a different activity: it is suitable for surfers of all experience levels. You can therefore tailor your coastal stay to suit your preference for sheltered swimming areas or a surf beach.

At the mouth of the Anglesea River, the Surf Coast Walk follows the inlet for a short stretch. Cyclists can ride the Surf Coast Walk to Anglesea as far as Point Roadknight. These two descriptions outline different ways to include the path in your day’s plans; they do not specify a longer distance.

Heathland, Lookouts and Wildlife Watching

The Yan Wirring Mirr walking track is 6 km long and passes through Anglesea Heath. More than 100 species of native orchids grow in this heathland, which is rich in flora. Anglesea thus offers a named walking track and a distinctive natural setting alongside its coastal attractions.

From Loveridge Lookout, a 270-degree panorama stretches beyond Anglesea, the river and Point Roadknight as far as Aireys Inlet. For a different way to experience nature, the Anglesea Golf Club offers Guided Kangaroo Tours. They offer the chance to observe more than 300 Eastern Grey Kangaroos up close in their natural habitat. Which animals can be seen depends on tour operating conditions.

Art, Local History and a Playground with a Special Story

Anglesea Art Space is a community-based gallery with a changing program of local artists. If you want to plan a visit around a particular exhibition, take the regular program changes into account. The Anglesea and District Historical Society holds general meetings with guest speakers and historical excursions; visitors are always welcome. Event dates may change.

The playground at Coogoorah Park also draws on a piece of coastal history: its wooden ship is inspired by the wreck of the Inverlochy, which sank off the coast in 1902. This detail connects a playground feature with a specific event in local history.

Things to Do on the Anglesea Riverbank

The Riverbank Market is held on a Sunday once a month at the Anglesea Riverbank. As dates may vary, check the specific market day before visiting. Next to Anglesea Bridge on the Anglesea River, Anglesea Paddle Boats and Canoe Hire offers pedal boats and canoes; availability may change. A beach wheelchair can also be borrowed at the Riverbank. Loan arrangements may change too, so it is a good idea to confirm them before your visit.
