Woodgate is a small coastal town 40 kilometres south of Bundaberg. A 16-kilometre-long sandy beach, its location beside Burrum Coast National Park and activities on the water define the town. Burrum Coast National Park lies immediately behind Woodgate; the Woodgate section is within walking distance depending on your accommodation. When planning your stay, you can consider time at the beach, trails in the park and activities on the water as separate focuses. Access points also vary depending on your destination.

Beach, swimming and family activities

Woodgate Beach is a sheltered beach with calm, clear water. There are areas for swimming and family activities. At Banksia Park in Woodgate, you’ll find an upgraded playground, a barbecue area and shady spots to relax. Facilities can change over time; check current local advice before your visit.

The Banksia Boardwalk at Woodgate Beach is wheelchair accessible. Swimming conditions and patrols can change, so it’s a good idea to check the latest beach advice before swimming. This will help you plan around the conditions at the time.

Walks along the Esplanade and in the national park

A walking and cycling path runs the entire length of the Esplanade. In the Woodgate section of Burrum Coast National Park, the Melaleuca Track is a 12.3-kilometre circuit through the park. This gives you a choice of different types of routes: a path along the Esplanade or a named circuit in the park. The distance of the Melaleuca Track also provides a specific figure to help you plan your outing.

If you want to reach the national park on foot, this depends on your accommodation. The Woodgate section is not equally accessible on foot from every accommodation option. When planning your stay, it’s therefore useful to consider your intended park visit alongside your starting point.

Boat ramp, paddling and stand-up paddleboarding

There is a public boat ramp at Woodgate Beach. At the Walkers Point day-use area, located in the Woodgate section of the park, you can launch canoes or kayaks to explore the rivers and the sea. The area is accessible by a conventional vehicle. Visitors can learn to stand-up paddle at Theodolite Creek near Woodgate Beach.

Options vary by location and activity: a boat ramp at the beach, canoe or kayak use at Walkers Point, and a learn-to-paddle offering at the creek. Water conditions and access can change; equipment availability may also vary. Check local advice before making firm plans for a water activity.

Check park access conditions before you drive

If you’re visiting the park, check the access conditions for your specific destinations. Walkers Point is accessible by a conventional vehicle. Different conditions apply to Burrum Point campground: it is accessible only by high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles with low- and high-range gearing, and off-road caravans. Access may be restricted in wet weather.

Burrum Point campground is located behind sensitive dunes; from there, it’s a short walk to the water and beach. This information applies to the campground. If you’re planning to visit, check park alerts before you drive and allow for possible restrictions in wet weather.
