When choosing a stay in Murgon, you can focus on different aspects: the South Burnett Rail Trail, the town’s cultural and architectural history, or offerings related to fossils and visual art. If you’re looking for a hotel in Murgon, consider which of these themes you’d like to shape your trip most. The Rail Trail route, historic sites and changing cultural offerings each provide a different insight into the town.

Rail Trail route and surface

The South Burnett Rail Trail has a 43 km sealed section from Kingaroy to Murgon. Beyond Murgon, the trail continues for another 7.9 km as an unsealed rail trail to the turnoff onto Moondooner Road for the Moffatdale Winery Route. The two sections differ in both length and surface. If you’re including the Rail Trail in your travel plans, you can consider these details separately rather than treating the entire route as one continuous section. This makes it possible to understand the route in terms of specific features: the sealed section runs from Kingaroy to Murgon, while a shorter unsealed rail trail continues beyond Murgon to the turnoff mentioned above.

Cultural history in several chapters

Since its unveiling in 1921, the Murgon War Memorial has been closely associated with the community and serves as the focal point for Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies. Its significance is therefore both historical and communal. The town’s history also includes buildings and institutions from different areas of public life.

The former Murgon Star Picture Theatre was the first and only purpose-built cinema in Murgon. The former South Burnett Co-operative Dairy Association Factory is an important testament to the growth and development of the dairy industry in Queensland in the 20th century. The historical significance of the former Queensland National Bank building lies in its preservation: it is the only bank building constructed in Murgon in the first half of the 20th century that remains on its original site.

Architecture also offers a distinct perspective on Murgon’s history. The Murgon Civic Centre is a good, representative and intact example of a regional civic centre in the Art Deco and Modernist styles. Murgon State School preserves outstanding examples of standardised government designs. These designs show architectural responses to the government’s educational ideas at the time. Together, the memorial, former commercial and cultural buildings, and public architecture point to different facets of Murgon’s development.

Fossils, dairy history and art

The Fossil Experience at the Murgon Fossil Museum is an interactive palaeontological journey exploring the living things that inhabited the Murgon region 24 to 70 million years ago. The Dairy and Heritage Museum in Murgon, by contrast, recognises the importance of the dairy industry to Queensland’s early development and particularly to South Burnett. The two themes offer different perspectives on time: prehistoric life on the one hand, and the history of a formative regional industry on the other.

The Fine Art Gallery features a constantly changing exhibition of paintings, sculptures and multidimensional artworks by local and visiting artists. Its program also includes workshops, themed exhibitions and presentations for residents and visitors. As the availability of individual offerings may vary, check in advance which events are taking place during your trip.
