South Molle Island offers hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as nature and cultural features that may influence your travel decision. When choosing a destination for active days, specific trail features, wildlife sightings and historical traces can make the difference. The island’s trail network comprises a total of 10 kilometres of hiking and mountain biking trails.

Hiking and mountain biking trails

One specific route runs from Sandy Bay to Spion Kop. It is 8.4 kilometres long, with the distance covering the return trip. It is rated moderate for hiking and easy for cycling. The ratings therefore apply to different ways of getting around. The 8.4 kilometres refers to one specific return route, while the 10 kilometres refers to the trail network as a whole. These figures therefore cover different scopes: one specific route and the entire network.

The mountain bike trail leads to three lookouts: Mt. Jefferys, Spion Kop and Balancing Rock. Spion Kop appears in two route descriptions: as the destination of the route from Sandy Bay and as one of the lookouts along the mountain bike trail. This makes it possible to recognise the shared place name without treating the two routes as one and the same. Track conditions can change.

Coast, camping and wildlife watching

There are two camping areas on South Molle Island. The Sandy Bay camping area has a long sandy beach suitable for beachcombing. Conditions in the camping area can change; check the latest information before visiting.

Sooty oystercatchers, white-faced herons and reef herons can be seen while birdwatching along the coast and among the rocks. Flying fox colonies can also be seen on South Molle Island; individual sightings are not guaranteed. Jewel spiders and golden orb-weaver spiders are common along the walking trails, although wildlife sightings can vary. The observation locations differ: birds are associated with the coast and rocks, while both groups of spiders are associated with the walking trails.

Ngaro traces and island history

Evidence of Ngaro occupation includes stone axes and cutting tools found at a quarry. South Molle Island has a quarry where stone was extracted to make tools and weapons. A memorial plaque on Lamond Hill commemorates Henry and other members of his family. The island’s tourism history also has a specific date: a resort was established on the island in 1937. These clues represent different aspects of the island’s history: archaeological finds and toolmaking, family remembrance and resort history.

Getting there by boat

For a South Molle Island tour, departure is from Shute Harbour, followed by a short boat transfer to the island. Both the departure point and the transfer are therefore part of planning this tour. Transfer details can change, so check the latest tour information in advance.
