Oak Beach: Beach, Mangroves and Coconut Palms
Accommodation in Oak Beach
Oak Beach is a small hamlet with privately owned and rental homes immediately behind the beach. The settlement lies away from the Great Barrier Reef Drive. The Thala Beach Nature Reserve Resort is located right next to Oak Beach and is another landmark in the coastal landscape.
Sandy Beach, Reef and Mangroves
Oak Beach’s beach is sandy and has an inner coral reef at one end. Its length is reported differently: one description gives 1.5 kilometres, while a separate estimate puts it at about two kilometres. Behind the sand dunes, a mangrove system extends to the southern end of the beach. It includes tidal creeks and lagoons, and numerous salt-tolerant mangrove plants also grow there. As a result, the coastal landscape includes not only the beach but also a mangrove area shaped by the tides.
Forest and Coconut Palms in the Nearby Reserve
Thala Beach Nature Reserve is an eco-resort and wildlife refuge with 58 hectares of native forest. More than 700 coconut palms grow in straight rows within the reserve. The forest and palm plantation form a different type of landscape from Oak Beach’s beach and mangrove system. For travellers who also consider the surrounding area when choosing a coastal destination, this nearby forest and palm area is part of the local landscape.
Walking Trails and Coconut Tour
The walking trails at Thala Beach Nature Reserve lead across the headland and through beach, forest and coconut plantation areas. The property is reserved exclusively for in-house guests. The Coconut Odyssey tour is also reserved for overnight guests. It includes tasting different coconuts and learning about coconuts. The trails pass through several types of landscape, while the tour focuses on tastings and information about coconuts. The tour operates on different days from week to week. So, if you are planning to take part, check the schedule for your travel dates.
Plantation and Regional Coastal Landscape
Oak Beach is also home to Oaks Kitchen & Garden Cooking School, set amid a tropical crop plantation surrounded by numerous coconut palms. The four-acre property supplies the school with home-grown tropical fruit and vegetables, as well as aromatic herbs and spices. The plantation, its crops and its produce add another, agriculture-focused facet to the picture of the area.
Pebbly Beach, on Great Barrier Reef Drive, is also in the local government area that includes Oak Beach. Its shoreline consists of tiny, smooth pebbles and stones. Between Pebbly Beach and Ellis Beach, visitors and locals stop along Great Barrier Reef Drive to create environmentally friendly designs on rock formations. Take care when approaching and stopping. Oak Beach has a sandy beach and an inner coral reef at one end, while Pebbly Beach’s shoreline consists of smooth pebbles and stones.
