Getting to Bowen and finding your way around

Bowen is five minutes by car from the Bruce Highway, the main road along Queensland’s east coast. For train travel, Queensland Rail’s “Spirit of Queensland” offers regular services to and from Bowen. Check the timetable for your specific journey. There are two visitor information points in town: the Bowen Visitor Information Centre is next to the 10 m-high Big Mango sculpture, and an Information Booth is located on the Front Beach Esplanade.

Nature and birdwatching at Mullers Lagoon

Mullers Lagoon is a 23.57-hectare wetland in central Bowen that is easy to access. Walking paths run around the lagoon, and a bird hide makes birdwatching easier. A total of 176 bird species have been recorded at Mullers Lagoon. The paths and hide offer a clear connection with nature: here, you can combine a walk with observing birdlife.

Beaches, snorkelling and activities on the water

From Bowen’s beaches, you can head straight into the water and explore the living fringing reef and its diverse marine life while snorkelling. Horseshoe Bay is a particularly popular spot for diving and snorkelling. Queens Beach has a shared walking and cycling path, as well as a cycling course. Conditions for kitesurfing can be found at the northern end of the beach, at the mouth of the Don River. The activities mentioned range from exploring the fringing reef to cycling and kitesurfing. There is also a free water park at Front Beach. From the jetty, you can watch green sea turtles and, at low tide, thousands of soldier crabs on the sand.

Bowen’s history in its memorials and streetscape

The Catalina Memorial on the Foreshore is an interpretive centre that commemorates the Catalinas and honours Bowen residents who served Australia in historic conflicts. At Yasso Point, information panels tell the story of the South Sea Islander families brought to Bowen to work in the sugarcane fields. The Bowen Museum on Gordon Street presents the town’s pioneering history through hundreds of catalogued and exhibited objects, as well as records about Bowen and the district. History is also present in the streetscape: the 19 murals depict scenes from Bowen’s diverse history, and most are in the town centre. The Cape Edgecumbe Walking Track includes a World War II radar station.
