Discover Longreach: Qantas history, museums and nature
Accommodation in Longreach
Longreach brings together aviation history, railway heritage, museums and experiences in the Outback landscape. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can base your choice on the topics that interest you most: Qantas and Australian aviation, local history, a trip on the Thomson River or the landscapes of Iningai Nature Reserve. The attractions described range from historic buildings and collections to a sunset cruise and walking loops in the nature reserve.
Qantas and aviation history
The Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach is dedicated to Qantas’s place of origin and the history of Australian aviation. The aircraft on display there include a Boeing 747 and a Super Constellation. The heritage-listed Qantas Hangar adds to this look at the airline’s early years: built in 1922, it witnessed the early years of Qantas Airways.
The Qantas Founders Museum also includes the Longreach Museum of Art gallery. It comprises three galleries with a total of 130 linear metres of exhibition space. This brings aviation history, aircraft and a gallery with its own name together in one museum setting. These different focuses may help with your planning if you’re particularly interested in the history of Qantas or in exhibitions.
Local history and railway heritage
The Longreach Powerhouse & Historical Museum includes a former power station complex, a local history collection featuring the 1921 swimming pool and Nogo Cottage, and displays of agricultural and road maintenance machinery. This brings together the former power supply, local history and machinery in one museum complex. The historical scope ranges from a specific structure, such as the swimming pool, to topics in agriculture and road maintenance.
Longreach Historic Railway Station is in the centre of Longreach and was built in 1916. Its classic Queensland railway architecture is evident in features such as wide verandas and corrugated iron roofs. The year it was built and these architectural features give the station a historical focus distinct from the museums’ collections and displays. If you’re interested in architecture, it offers a specific example of the design of a historic Queensland railway station.
Experiences along the road and on the river
The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame uses interactive technologies and a modern, self-guided audio guide. The Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience, by contrast, centres on a journey along the old Longreach–Windorah mail route. It begins in the centre of Longreach and also includes an Outback smoko and a classic bush film. This lets you choose between a museum visit with an audio guide and an experience connected to the historic mail route.
Starlight’s Cruise Experience offers another perspective on the region: the sunset cruise departs from Longreach and travels along the Thomson River aboard the historic paddle steamer Thomson Belle. While the museums and station focus on specific buildings, collections or historical topics, this cruise combines the river with a historic vessel. Which of these options shapes your stay depends on whether you prefer exhibitions, railway architecture, a cruise or a combination of several themes.
Nature and getting your bearings in Longreach
Iningai Nature Reserve is part of the Longreach Town Common and features varied landscapes with floodplains and waterholes. Its three walking loops are called Coolibah, Wilga and Gidgee; they are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. This lets you include the nature reserve’s landscape as a focus in your plans, alongside the museums and historic buildings.
For help finding your way around town, Longreach Regional Council operates the Longreach Explore Centre as a visitor information centre. Its address is 99A Qantas Park, Eagle Street, Longreach. Together with the various museums, the railway station, experiences on the river and walking loops in Iningai Nature Reserve, this gives you a specific place to start when planning your stay around particular themes.
