Tully is a regional town whose visitor attractions centre on sugar production, local history and distinctive buildings. If you’re looking for a hotel in Tully, you’ll encounter several different sides of the town: the Tully Sugar Mill, the exhibition at the Tully Visitor Centre, the Tully Heritage Trail and the Golden Gumboot. This makes it easy to explore Tully through the themes that may interest you during your stay—industrial processes, regional history or a walking trail featured in the local guide.

Tours of the Tully Sugar Mill

Tully Sugar operates one of Australia’s largest sugar mills in the regional town of Tully. Guided tours of the Tully Sugar Mill give visitors an insight into its operations and provide more information about the local sugar industry and sugar production. The tours are organised through the Tully Visitor & Information Centre, focusing on a specific aspect of the town’s industrial and agricultural character. Tours are subject to weather and maintenance conditions. Check the operator’s latest information before making plans.

During the sugarcane harvest season, from June to November, the Tully Visitor Centre accepts bookings for mill tours. If this tour is an important part of your trip, contact the centre and check current booking options in advance. Take the season into account when planning your trip.

Exhibition and visitor centre

The Tully Visitor Centre offers an interpretive exhibition about the history of Tully, European settlement and the region’s Indigenous culture. The exhibition complements the mill tour with a cultural and local-history perspective. Cars, caravans and motorhomes can drive directly to the centre. Check the latest access information before setting out, as access arrangements may change. The centre brings together tour organisation and a dedicated exhibition about the town’s history.

Heritage Trail and heritage-listed building

Unlike the guided factory tour, the Tully Heritage Trail is a walking trail. The Cassowary Coast Handbook 2024–2025 lists it among the region’s easy and moderate walks, with Tully given as its location. Another architectural feature of the town is the existing brick building of Tully State School. It was heritage-listed in 1994. Here, the building itself is the focus, while the Heritage Trail is classified as a walking trail.

Golden Gumboot: rainfall and views

The 7.9-metre-high Golden Gumboot is a monument celebrating Tully’s high rainfall. Inside, a spiral staircase leads to an observation platform with views across the town. The monument thus links its rainfall theme with a view over Tully. Its height and the views give the structure a different connection to the town than sugar production or the heritage-listed school building.
