Longreach Regional: Aviation History and the Thomson River

The Thomson River flows through Longreach, giving the destination a distinctive connection to the water. Aviation history at the Qantas Founders Museum

In June 1996, the Governor-General of Australia opened the first stage of the Qantas Founders Museum, a development costing AUD 1.3 million, in the Qantas Hangar in Longreach, which is now classified as a National Heritage site. The museum’s story continues through a range of formats: interactive tabletop presentations, the Catalina Double Sunrise Display, and museum tours are among its newer exhibitions and experiences.

The one-hour 747 Wing Walk Tour includes access to the Boeing 747 flight deck, including the pilot’s seat, and a walk along the wing. Another tour lasts 90 minutes and introduces the historic aircraft Douglas DC-3, Catalina Flying Boat, Lockheed Super Constellation, Boeing 707 and Boeing 747. Luminescent Longreach combines light and sound with Qantas history: the show projects the airline’s 100-year history onto a Boeing 747, a Boeing 707 and a Super Constellation. This offers different ways to engage with the story—from a guided encounter with aircraft to a production that brings history to life on the aircraft themselves.

The Thomson River and nature trails

The Thomson River is more than just part of the town’s landscape. The Thomson River Flood Plain Walk runs 4.5 kilometres one way from Longreach to the Old Bridge; the route passes a variety of plant and animal life. The Linear Botanical Gardens Walk has a different focus: its diverse plant life consists mainly of native species.

A trip on the water also offers a range of experiences. Starlight’s Cruise Experience is a sunset cruise on the Thomson River with a stockman’s campfire dinner and entertainment by a bush poet. Availability may vary seasonally. The M.V. Longreach Explorer cruises along the river with 360-degree views and stops at Smithy’s Outback Dinner & Show. There, guests are offered a table-service dinner, contemporary camp-oven-inspired cuisine, live music and stories; this cruise may also be available seasonally.

Near Longreach, Iningai Nature Reserve has three nature trails. These include the 3.7-kilometre Coolibah Loop, described as easy, with a stated walking time of one and a half hours. Across the wider Longreach region, Mitchell grassland is often associated with floodplains, riverside areas, seasonal creeks and waterholes.

History and Outback experiences

The Longreach Powerhouse & Historical Museum comprises three areas: the former Longreach Power House Generating Complex, a local history collection, and displays of agricultural and road-maintenance machinery. This local and technical history complements the aviation exhibitions with further insights into Longreach.

The Outback Stockman’s Live Show includes a tribute to the Waler horse, working dogs, horsemanship and stockman’s activities. As availability may change, it is advisable to check booking conditions before your trip. Another tour follows a bush track along the historic Longreach–Windorah mail route and includes a short canter in a stagecoach; availability here may also vary seasonally.

The Longreach Historic Railway Station is a key point of reference for getting around town: it is located in the centre of Longreach and is a functioning transport hub.
