Lizard Island can be explored on foot along a variety of trails. The trail network ranges from easy to very difficult. For planning, both distance and the stated difficulty are relevant; trails are also identified as one-way, return or circuit routes. They lead through landscapes such as swamps and forest, to Mangrove Beach on the edge of the Blue Lagoon, or up to the island’s highest point.

Walking Trails by Length and Difficulty

The easy Watsons Walk is 520 m long (one way). A sandy path leads through a paperbark swamp to Watsons Cottage. The Blue Lagoon Track is also easy: its 455 m includes the return journey, and its destination is Mangrove Beach on the edge of the Blue Lagoon. The moderate Chinamans Ridge Track is 340 m long (one way) and leads to a lookout over Watsons Bay.

It is worth noting the route type alongside these distances: a one-way distance is not the same measure as a return journey. The easy Research Road is 4.4 km for the return journey. It starts at the western end of the airstrip and leads through forest to the Lizard Island Research Station. The Pandanus Track offers a different route: first it crosses a boardwalk through mangroves, then follows an unsealed path past a paperbark and pandanus swamp to the airstrip. Along the way, you can learn more about how Aboriginal People use plants and animals.

The circuit to Cooks Look is 2.25 km long and rated very difficult; it starts in Watsons Bay. Visitors can climb to the summit, the highest point on the island. Compared with the easy trails, this shows that distance alone does not describe the level of difficulty. The different route types and stated difficulty ratings are also important when assessing the trails for your stay.

Birdwatching, Lagoon and Reef

Along the walking trails, you may spot species such as pheasant coucals and yellow-bellied sunbirds; purple swamphens can be seen there in summer. The trails therefore offer access not only to different landscapes but also the opportunity to watch the island’s birdlife.

The well-developed fringing reef of the Lizard Island Group surrounds the 10 m-deep Blue Lagoon. The reef and waters around the island group are within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Watsons Bay is also home to the Clam Gardens, a snorkelling site. The Lizard Island National Park is managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service for visitors’ enjoyment and the protection of nature.

Dingaal Culture and Island History

The Dingaal Aboriginal People are the Traditional Owners of Lizard Island; the islands hold great cultural significance for them. Jiigurru, the Dingaal name for Lizard Island, is a sacred place. Young boys were taken there for initiation; important gatherings of elders from neighbouring clans were also held there.

Watsons Cottage also connects a walking trail with the island’s history. Watsons Walk leads to the cottage; its stone ruins recall early tragic encounters between Aboriginal People and the “Newcomers”. Cooks Look has another historical connection: Lieutenant Cook climbed to the island’s highest point to find a way through the reef maze. The trails thus bring together the landscape of today and different chapters of the island’s history.

Research and Geographic Context

The Australian Museum owns and operates the Lizard Island Research Station to promote coral reef research and education on the Great Barrier Reef. Coral Reef Study Tours have been held there annually since 2022. The Lizard Island Coral Reef Study Tour is an intensive educational program on coral reef science on the Great Barrier Reef, led by marine scientists. Tours of the Research Station are offered at certain times. If you plan to take a tour, check the current tour options with the operator.

For geographic context: the six islands of Lizard Island National Park lie 33 km off the coast of Cape Flattery, 93 km northeast of Cooktown and 250 km northeast of Cairns. These distances give a sense of the national park’s location; they refer to different reference points and directions.
