Hamilton Island lies in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Beaches, walking trails, lookouts and excursions to the reef shape the experiences available here. More than 60 activities are offered on the island. You can tailor your stay to how you want to spend your time: by the water, on the trails or on excursions.

Beaches and water sports

Catseye Beach is one of Hamilton Island’s main beaches and is suitable for swimming and water sports. Hamilton Island Beach Sports rents catamarans, paddleboards, kayaks and snorkelling equipment there. You can snorkel over the fringing reef just offshore at low tide; the tide is important. Rental availability and conditions may change, so it’s worth checking the latest information if you’re planning to use specific equipment.

The water also takes centre stage at Hamilton Island Marina: it’s the island’s nautical hub for private and charter boats exploring the Great Barrier Reef and other Whitsunday Islands. Activities on offer include snorkelling, diving, sailing and helicopter experiences to explore the reef. Sunset sailing and day trips to Whitehaven Beach are also available from Hamilton Island.

Walking trails and lookouts

Passage Peak is the highest point on Hamilton Island, with views across the Whitsundays. The Middle Head Trail passes through an area rich in native Australian flora and ends at a hilltop with views of the Whitsunday Islands and the waters to the south. Coral Cove is a secluded beach with views towards Lindeman Island.

For a hike with a clearly specified route, try the Escape Beach Trail: this moderate Grade 3 trail runs 3.3 kilometres each way from the Scenic Trail Entrance, through Saddle Junction and on to Escape Beach. The distance is given for one direction. The Hamilton Island Icons Trail is a free walk along the island’s walking trails. Its stops include a three-metre-high chair, a large swing, a hammock and a panoramic viewing platform. The bushwalking trails are open from sunrise to sunset and are unstaffed; trail details and availability may change.

Water and air excursions

A fly-and-cruise excursion from Hamilton Island to Reefworld on Hardy Reef combines a helicopter flight and a catamaran trip with snorkelling or diving. If you’d like to see the landscape from the air, scenic flights to the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach depart from the airport. Jet ski tours with an experienced instructor explore the waters of the Whitsundays around Hamilton Island; they’re weather-dependent and depart from the marina’s C-arm, opposite the Marina Tavern.

Another way to explore the island’s trails is HI Mountain Biking: this self-guided e-bike experience takes you to secluded lookouts and hidden beaches. Access to the trails may be weather-dependent. If you’re looking for wildlife encounters instead, Hamilton Island Wildlife offers close-up encounters with koalas, pythons and lizards. Individual encounters may change.
