Leslie: Fishing, History and Scenery
Accommodation in Leslie
Leslie offers several specific points of interest for a stay: its connection to Patrick Leslie, the Sprint Route and fishing opportunities by the water. Local history, scenery and practical visitor information sit side by side. You can weigh up whether you are more interested in historical connections, a drive through the countryside or a stay by the water.
Local History and Granite Art
Leslie was named after Patrick Leslie. Granite sculptures of Patrick Leslie and his wife Kate are located near the Leslie Dam wall. The name is reflected both in the town’s name and in the artworks. The name and sculptures offer two different ways to connect with local history: one through the town’s naming, the other through the couple depicted. For travellers interested in culture, this is a specific local connection.
The Sprint Route
The Sprint Route runs through the Leslie district and begins at Sandy Creek Road, 8 kilometres to the right of Warwick’s central business district. It is a relaxed drive through bushland, past working farms and through windy, tree-lined landscapes. It was once the main road to Goondiwindi and was used by bullock drivers. Its former role as a main road and the description of the scenery show two different sides of the route: its historic use and the character of the drive described. The starting point provides a specific point of reference; the scenery and history help put the route in context.
Fishing at the Lake and Sandy Creek
Fishing is permitted at Lake Leslie in the area around Leslie. However, bank fishing on or near the dam wall is not permitted. This restriction specifically applies to the area along the bank; it does not prohibit fishing at Lake Leslie altogether. Leslie Reserve offers a quiet fishing spot on the banks of Sandy Creek and is a recommended stop for fishing. This gives you two different options to consider: fishing at Lake Leslie, subject to the rule for the bank by the dam, and the fishing spot at Sandy Creek.
At Leslie Reserve, Sandy Creek can rise over its banks without warning because it is downstream of the Leslie Dam gates. Camping is not permitted there. If you are planning a fishing stop, these notes can help you distinguish the right location from the conditions that apply during your visit.
Camping and Facilities at Leslie Dam
Private camping and overnight accommodation options are available at the designated campground at Leslie Dam. Washpool Camping Reserve is at the southern end of Leslie Dam. Facilities at the dam include a boat ramp, a picnic area with toilets, boat hire and boat fuel. Here you will find information on both overnight options and facilities for a stay by the water. Facilities may change, so check locally before your visit to confirm what is available.
