Discover Gatton: Campus, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Gatton
Gatton offers things to see and do centred on the UQ Gatton campus, nature observation and culture. You can include a campus tour or the self-guided Heritage Walk in your plans, and discover birdwatching spots and walking tracks. At the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre, you can explore art, transport history and local personalities. Lake Apex and Lake Apex Park are also nearby. If you’re looking for a hotel in Gatton, these varied attractions can help you plan your stay around your interests.
Campus Visit and History
A tour of the UQ Gatton campus can be booked. Check the tour arrangements before your visit. For a self-guided walk, a 2004 publication, “The Stories So Far”, about the Heritage Walk is available. The walk relates to the Gatton Campus, established in 1897; you can get the publication from the UQ Gatton Museum or the UQ Gatton Past Students' Association office. If you’re planning to do the walk yourself, check that the publication is available before your visit.
The UQ Gatton Museum displays photographs and artefacts documenting the development of the campus and community. The institution’s history runs from the Queensland Agricultural College to the Queensland Agricultural High School and College, and then to The University of Queensland, Gatton Campus. The campus’s establishment in 1897 provides a historical timeframe for this development: the exhibition covers both the institution’s changes and the community’s history.
The museum is open most Monday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Visits at other times are possible by prior arrangement. Opening hours may change; check the current arrangements before visiting.
Nature Observation and Walking Tracks
The UQ Gatton Environmental Park has two bird hides, walking tracks, boardwalks and plant species that provide habitats for local fauna. If you’re interested in birdwatching, the two hides give your visit a specific focus. Walking tracks and boardwalks offer additional ways to explore the park on foot.
Lake Galletly was created in 1980 as a habitat and refuge for waterbirds. The lake is home to various bird species, including the Red-rumped Parrot and Magpie Goose. Its focus on waterbirds differs from the broader nature theme of the Environmental Park, with its plant habitats, walking tracks and bird hides.
Lake Apex Park is a few minutes from Gatton’s centre, with a sealed walking path around the lake. Lake Apex, also a few minutes from the centre, is home to more than 150 different bird species.
Art and Culture at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre
The art gallery at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre presents visual art exhibitions that change every six to eight weeks. This schedule may change; if the gallery is important to your plans, check the current exhibition program. The Queensland Transport Museum presents an exhibition of transport vehicles from different eras. At the Lockyer Legends Hall of Fame, you can look around and learn about notable people from the Lockyer Valley. The cultural offerings range from changing visual art exhibitions to transport history and local personalities.
Travel Information and Local Products
The Queensland Explore Centre – Gatton Visitor Information Centre provides travel information in the form of maps, brochures and itineraries. This can help you find your way around and plan outings. The centre also stocks locally made food products. Stock may change; if you’re visiting for a particular product, check its availability beforehand.
