Uki between the river and village history

Uki lies on the banks of the South Arm of the Tweed River. The main street is lined mostly with modest timber buildings, while steep hills and Mt. Warning (Wollumbin) form the scenic backdrop. The riverbank, timber architecture and surroundings give the place its distinctive character. When planning a stay, you can combine these features of the area with markets and insights into the village’s history.

The Uki Village Centre Heritage Walk is an easy, self-guided walk through part of the village. It follows the main street, Kyogle Road, and takes approximately one hour. This approximate duration gives you a practical guide for planning your day; check current route conditions locally. The walk focuses on the area’s history and follows a street that also helps shape the village’s character.

For more than four decades, volunteers from the Uki and South Arm Historical Society have preserved the community’s history. They share their stories and archives with residents and visitors, including on village walks. One visible architectural feature is the original timber classroom buildings at the front of Uki Public School. They add a specific example to the picture of the mostly modest timber buildings on the main street.

Markets and events in Uki

Produce from the region is available every Saturday morning at the Uki Farmers Market in Uki Hall. The Uki Buttery Bazaar takes place on the third Sunday of each month at 1454 Kyogle Road until August 2027. It features free entertainment, local food and arts and crafts. The schedules are clearly different: the Farmers Market is a weekly Saturday event, while the Bazaar is a monthly Sunday event with its own offerings. Check the event details before visiting the Bazaar.

If you plan your trip around a market visit, this difference provides a practical guide to timing: Saturday morning for the Farmers Market, or the third Sunday of the month for the Bazaar. The offerings also differ: regional produce is the focus of the Farmers Market, while the Bazaar also features entertainment, food and arts and crafts.

Mountain biking trails in Smiths Creek

Near Uki, in Smiths Creek, is the Uki Mountain Bike Park. It has more than 6.4 kilometres of mountain biking trails, with eight trails: one green climb and seven descents. The descents include three green (easy), three blue (more challenging) and one black diamond (very challenging). You can take the different ratings of the descents into account when choosing, rather than treating all trails as equally challenging.

The park also has a pump track for all ages, designed especially for children aged 5 to 12. The park may close in certain weather conditions; check the latest updates before you ride. This makes planning a park visit different from planning around the set market dates: in addition to what’s on offer, you’ll need to consider current weather conditions.
