South West Rocks: Beaches, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in South West Rocks
South West Rocks brings together beaches, coastal trails and cultural attractions. If you’re looking for a hotel in South West Rocks, you can plan your stay around the experiences that interest you: a sheltered swimming area, trails towards Arakoon and Trial Bay Gaol, or cultural themes and history.
Beaches and Getting Your Bearings
Horseshoe Bay Beach has a sheltered swimming area that’s popular with families. Good fishing spots are near the beach, which is also centrally located near the South West Rocks business district. Trial Bay Beach is set along a sheltered bay, protected from the swell by a purpose-built breakwater. These features offer different points of reference for planning your day: at Horseshoe Bay, there’s the swimming area, fishing spots and business district; at Trial Bay, the sheltered bay and breakwater.
Horseshoe Bay Beach has picnic areas, barbecue facilities, parking, toilets and a kiosk. As the operating status of these facilities may change, check their current availability before visiting.
Trails and Activities on the Water
The easy beach trail leads from South West Rocks towards Arakoon and Trial Bay Gaol. Alternatively, there’s a well-maintained, shaded trail running parallel to Landsborough Street and Phillip Drive. Check trail conditions and tides before setting out.
The Smoky Cape Range walking track also runs near South West Rocks. This 5.5 km coastal trail in the region offers impressive views. It’s another option for exploring on foot, while the beach trail leads towards Arakoon and Trial Bay Gaol.
Guided stand-up paddleboard tours are available at Back Creek. They add a guided on-water activity to the options of beaches and trails.
History and Art
Trial Bay Gaol offers an NPWS-led Twilight Tour. At sunset, visitors learn about the lives of the prisoners in Arakoon National Park. Availability may vary seasonally, so check in advance whether the tour is running on your preferred date.
Smoky Cape Lighthouse is also nearby. The heritage-listed lighthouse was built in 1891 and is one of the last lighthouses designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet. While the Twilight Tour explores the lives of the prisoners, the lighthouse’s construction date and design history offer a different historical focus.
Art is also part of the town: at Back Creek, bollard covers decorated with cultural motifs feature designs by Dunghutti artist Nancy Pattison. The South West Rocks Community Art Gallery is located in the centre of South West Rocks, in the heritage-listed Pilot’s Residence at the Maritime Precinct Hub. The creekside designs and the gallery in a heritage-listed building offer two different connections to art.
