In Rydal, railway history sits alongside opportunities to explore the town on foot and recurring events. Historic structures and objects include the railway station complex, a signal box and a restored luggage van. There is also the Rydal Heritage Walk, the Bicentennial National Trail, which passes through the town, and events at the showground. If you’re looking for a hotel in Rydal, these different highlights can help you choose a destination that suits your interests and planned travel dates.

Railway History in Rydal

The Rydal Rail Bridge and Viaduct Group includes the first brick arch bridges built on the New South Wales railway network. The group is of state-level historical and technical significance. The Rydal Railway Station group is also a significant early railway complex. The combination of a station and residence is rare: only five such structures remain.

Rydal Railway Station opened in 1869 and was the terminus of the western railway line until 1872. The signal box dates from 1915 and remained in operation until the late 1980s. A restored railway luggage van stands in the former horse dock at the station and illustrates an important part of the town’s history. Together, these dates and structures offer insight into different periods of railway history in Rydal.

Walk and Bicentennial National Trail

The Rydal Heritage Walk is a loop trail where you can explore historic Rydal on foot. The Bicentennial National Trail offers a different perspective: it passes through Rydal, is 5,330 kilometres long and runs from Cooktown in Queensland to Healesville in Victoria. The local walk and the long-distance trail therefore differ considerably in scale.

Rydal Showground is designated as a campground for the Bicentennial National Trail. This is a distinct point of reference for travellers interested in the trail’s route through Rydal. The campground designation and the trail’s route identify the connection without conflating the local walk with the long-distance route.

Events and Dates

The Rydal Show is held every year on the first Friday and Saturday in February at the historic Rydal Showground on Market Street. It showcases local produce and livestock, as well as arts, crafts and cooking. The exact programme may vary from year to year. If you’re travelling for the show, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Rydal Gymkhana is also held at Rydal Showground, on the last weekend of October. Sporting and entertainment events include the Stockmen’s Challenge, the Farmer’s Challenge, and Ironman and Ironwoman competitions. Check the specific dates before travelling for this event too.

ANZAC Day ceremonies are held every year at one of two memorials in Rydal. In even-numbered years, the ceremony takes place at the First World War memorial at Rydal Railway Station; in odd-numbered years, it is held at the Second World War memorial gates at Rydal Showground. The ceremony location therefore alternates between the station and showground each year.

Picnics and Stays

Greg Featherstone Park is located on Bathurst Street and has picnic facilities. It was established on railway land in 2000 as a community project. The park and its picnic facilities provide another place to visit in town, alongside the historic structures and events.

Accommodation is available in the station master’s residence, built in 1869 at Rydal Railway Station, for one or two couples or a small family. Availability and booking conditions may change; check both before booking. From Lithgow, you can reach Rydal via the Great Western Highway towards Bathurst. At the signposted turn-off at Mt. Lambie, Pikes Lane leads to Rydal; the town is about four kilometres from the turn-off. Road conditions and signage may change, so check them before travelling.
