Discover Peak Hill
Accommodation in Peak Hill
Visitors looking to include mining history, local history and outdoor trails in their stay will find several specific points of interest in Peak Hill. The offerings range from lookouts over historic and more recent mining sites to an approximately 1,400-metre nature walk, silos and harness racing.
Experience Mining
The Peak Hill Open Cut Experience offers walking trails and lookouts over historic and more recent mining sites. Self-guided walks are available daily from 9 am to 4 pm. Check visiting hours in advance, as opening arrangements may change.
Guided group tours are offered year-round by arrangement. They are intended for groups of 20 or more, must be booked in advance and are subject to guide availability. If you are travelling as a group, plan to arrange a date and make a booking before your visit. This distinguishes the self-guided walks, with their daily hours, from the guided tours, which your group must arrange in advance.
Trails and Nature
The Peak Hill Flora and Fauna Nature Walk is approximately 1,400 metres long. From a wooden footbridge, you can see the Hervey Ranges. Along the trail, you may spot rock wallabies or kangaroos, as well as a variety of plant species. The walk therefore combines a stated distance with a specific lookout point; wildlife sightings are possible, not guaranteed.
Goobang National Park is located near Peak Hill, between Peak Hill, Parkes and Molong. It offers scenic views, bushwalking, bush camping, picnic areas, mountain bike trails and four-wheel-drive tours. This range of activities sets the national park apart from the named Nature Walk: as well as walking, it includes camping, cycling and four-wheel-drive tours.
Bogan Weir is 7 km from Peak Hill. Activities there include picnicking, birdwatching, camping, canoeing, barbecuing and fishing. Access may be restricted after heavy rain. If you are planning a visit, check access conditions in advance and take this restriction into account.
Local History and Culture
The silos have two specific dates in their history: in 1918, Peak Hill became the site of Australia's first upright bulk wheat silo; a six-cell silo complex with a weighbridge was completed in Peak Hill in 1927. The Peak Hill silo can be seen from Lindner Avenue, which runs parallel to the railway line.
The Peak Hill Visitor Information Outlet also houses Peak Hill Country Crafts and the Open Cut Gallery. The Open Cut Gallery & Peak Hill Country Crafts shop displays historical photographs and memorabilia. Alongside the silos and mining history, these images and mementos offer another way to explore the town's past.
Harness racing was held at the Peak Hill Showground as early as the early 20th century, and Peak Hill continues to host many harness races. If a race is the reason for your trip, check dates and schedules separately. Event planning is therefore a different consideration from the daily visiting hours at the Open Cut Experience.
Plan Your Visit and Hotel Search
If a guided group tour or a harness race is to shape your stay, first confirm the relevant date: the tour requires advance booking, while race days should be checked separately. Self-guided walks and trails in and around Peak Hill offer other ways to plan your stay, while access to Bogan Weir may be restricted after heavy rain.
