North Sydney Council: Harbour Walks, Nature and Heritage
Accommodation in North Sydney Council
By the harbour, The Coal Loader is a heritage-listed former industrial site that brings together history, culture, industry, nature and community. Tunnel 2 is a public path leading to Balls Head. The site’s Platform offers harbour views and space for picnics, play and relaxation. At Balls Head, a historic flagpole stands 90 metres above sea level. From Waverton Station, Balls Head Reserve is a five- to ten-minute walk away.
Harbour, Islands and Bushland
Balls Head Reserve contains numerous Aboriginal sites, including archaeological deposits, shell middens, artworks and rock engravings. Berry Island offers a different way to experience the landscape: the Gadyan Track is an easy, signposted 750-metre circuit through the bushland around the island. It shares stories and legends of the Cammeraygal people. Gadyan is the Aboriginal name for the Sydney carpet shell, which is commonly found in shell middens on the island. Berry Island Reserve also has picnic areas, a small beach and a varied playground.
Other trails offer different experiences. The Gore Cove bushland walking trail links Smoothey Park, Greendale Park and Holloway Park with Berry Island Reserve via Gore Cove Reserve. The North Sydney Circle Walks are divided into six sections and connect Milsons Point, Waverton, Wollstonecraft, Long Gully Bridge, Cremorne Junction and Shell Cove. When choosing your hotel, you could first consider whether walking trails and scenery or cultural sites and history will be the focus of your trip.
Explore the History
The Don Bank Museum, North Sydney’s oldest timber house, is at 6 Napier Street in North Sydney. The building opened as a museum in 1981; its exhibitions explore the history of the house and its former residents. In heritage-listed Bradfield Park North, the self-guided Bradfield Park Heritage Walk explores the park’s history. Words, images and displays on the surviving building walls and foundations beneath the park make up the interpretive trail. The sandstone walls in Bradfield Park North are also surviving reminders of North Sydney’s history. The playground equipment there offers activities for children under five and children over five.
The Kirribilli History Walk winds through Kirribilli’s historic layers, from stone houses to Art Deco apartments. Despite post-war development, Kirribilli has preserved much of its built heritage. In Neutral Bay, the historic house museum Nutcote, with its well-kept garden, tells the story of May Gibbs’s life. The house and garden are open to visitors, who can see May Gibbs’s personal artefacts, pictures, sketches, letters and other memorabilia. Wendy’s Secret Garden is in Lavender Bay; admission is free.
