When planning a stay in Buckra Bendinni, it is worth distinguishing the access road to the forest areas from a proposed walking section. The roads described, the forested surroundings and nearby lookouts offer different points of reference for planning your trip.

Getting There and Walking Routes

On the drive from Bowraville to Dunggir National Park, Buckra Bendinni Road is a seven-kilometre section. You then turn onto Hanging Rock Road. Check the latest official visitor information when planning your route.

The walking trail concept describes nearby Hanging Rock Road as a steep forest road: over 17.6 kilometres, it descends 530 metres to the intersection with Upper Buckra Bendinni Road. The proposed Dunggirr walking section is intended to run from the valley floor at Buckra Bendinni up to Kosekai Lookout, west of Bowraville. Shortly after the start of the Dunggirr section, Springs Road crosses Buckra Bendinni Creek. The concept plan specifies a 310-metre climb over 4.4 kilometres on Springs Road at this point.

Forest Landscape and Views

The Dunggirr section includes rainforest and mixed eucalypt forest. Koalas are known to use this forest, and lyrebirds are often heard along the section. Dunggir National Park is nearby. It includes three types of rainforest, as well as sclerophyll forests characterised by blackbutt, brushbox and turpentine.

Nearby Kosekai Lookout offers an east-facing panorama across the Nambucca Valley to the coast, more than 30 kilometres away. From there, views also extend across the lower Nambucca and Macleay valleys. The lookout therefore takes in both the coast and the valleys.

History and Accommodation

Gumbaynggirr State Conservation Area was formerly part of the Buckra Bendinni, Mistake and Oakes State Forests. This former designation records the protected area's historical connection with the three state forests.

In the broader destination of Nambucca Shire Council

In the broader destination of Nambucca Shire Council, the Nambucca Valley follows the winding Nambucca River from the hinterland to the coast. Kayaking is possible on the river. Kayaking and canoeing are possible at Warrell Creek in Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park.

Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park is of great cultural significance to the Gumbaynggirr community of the Nambucca Valley. Sites in the park provide evidence of continuous use of the area for thousands of years. The park is jointly managed by Aboriginal people of the Nambucca Valley and NPWS.

A boardwalk connects the Nambucca Valley Visitor Information Centre, near Giinagay Way, with Bellwood Park and the V-Wall at the river mouth. The centre provides information about local and regional attractions and upcoming events, helps visitors find accommodation, and offers maps and brochures.
