When planning a stay in Inverell, you can tailor your focus to your interests: historic buildings, art, vehicles or nature activities offer different themes to explore. If you’re looking for hotels in Inverell, it may help to first consider which of these interests you’d like to shape your stay.

Historic Buildings and Mining History

Inverell Pioneer Village is a collection of authentic historic buildings and homes from Inverell and the surrounding districts. The buildings date from 1841 onwards and are set in a peaceful village setting. One specific example in the collection is Grove Homestead, originally built in 1841. This brings together an overview of the wider collection with a named building and a precisely dated construction year.

Another historical focus can be found at the Pioneer Village’s Mining Museum. It houses photographs and mining tools from the late 19th century from the Inverell, Tingha and Emmaville districts. While Pioneer Village brings together historic homes and buildings, the focus here is on mining-related collection items and the districts they come from. Both themes offer different perspectives on the region’s history.

Art and Exhibitions in Inverell

Inverell Art Gallery displays a diverse selection of original art and crafts to view and buy. It is housed in two distinctive historic buildings: the old School of Arts building, built in 1906, and Butler Hall, built in 1909. This brings the exhibited works and the history of the two gallery buildings together as different aspects of a visit.

In front of the gallery on Evans Street is the 94-metre-long footpath mosaic “Meandering Macintyre”. It depicts the course of the Macintyre River. The art experience thus extends beyond the collection inside the buildings to a work on the footpath whose subject is the river.

The gallery’s main exhibition is The Inverell Art Prize, a competition held every October. If you’d like to time your trip to coincide with this event, check the dates for the relevant edition, as dates for future editions may vary.

Vehicles and Nature Experiences

The National Transport Museum in Inverell has more than 200 members and displays 120 vehicles across the vintage, veteran and classic categories, as well as motorcycles. This gives it a different focus from Pioneer Village and the art gallery: here, the emphasis is on vehicle types rather than historic buildings or artworks.

Lake Inverell lies on the eastern edge of town and is a 6.6-hectare nature reserve, as well as a wildlife and recreation reserve. The area is designated for kayaking, fishing and birdwatching. Kayaking and fishing are water-based activities, while birdwatching focuses on wildlife. This reserve therefore offers options for different interests.

Billabong Blue Fossicking Park adds creek fossicking to these experiences. It is available seven days a week; you need to bring your own equipment and bookings are required.
