Batemans Bay brings together the mouth of the Clyde River, local history and a range of routes as different starting points for a trip. When planning, pay attention to the location of each attraction: some are in the destination itself, while others are specifically in the surrounding area.

Estuary and landscape

Batemans Bay is the sea mouth of the Clyde River. The estuary is home to some of the most extensive and productive oyster leases on the south coast of New South Wales. The mouth and oyster landscape give the destination a distinct geographical character. The regional context of the oyster leases adds a specific connection to the state’s south coast to the picture of the waterways.

The Water Gardens offer a different landscape experience: this six-hectare wetland park is near the centre of Batemans Bay. Its location and size give a clear sense of where this park is in relation to the centre. Together with the estuary, it shows two different aspects of the landscape that may be relevant when planning a trip.

Local history at the Heritage Museum

The Batemans Bay Heritage Museum presents the local history of the area, including early European settlement. In this context, timber harvesting and processing became important industries. The museum therefore offers a historical perspective on the region’s development, distinct from today’s descriptions of landscapes and routes. If you plan a visit, check which exhibitions are currently on display before your trip.

Routes in Batemans Bay and the surrounding area

The Batemans Bay Sculpture Walk is 1.5 kilometres long and ends at Batemans Bay Marina. If the sculpture collection is expanded, check the length and endpoint again before your visit. The Batemans Bay Cycleway offers a different route description: it heads into Batemans Bay, crosses the bridge and branches off into Wharf Road. The two descriptions therefore differ both in their named destination and in the waypoints they identify.

In the area surrounding the destination, the Munjip Trail runs along the coastal headlands of Eurobodalla. It leads south from Batehaven, near Batemans Bay, to McKenzies Beach, near Malua Bay. The Batemans Bay Snorkelling Trail links Maloneys Beach, north of Batemans Bay, with Sunshine Cove Beach to the south. The two routes explore different stretches of coast and each has its own endpoints. Before setting out, check access and conditions on the Munjip Trail, as well as conditions along the Snorkelling Trail and sea safety.

Market dates on the Clyde River

The Batemans Bay Sunday Market takes place on the first and third Sunday of each month on the Clyde River. If visiting the market is part of your travel plans, plan around these two dates and check the specific date before your trip. This helps you schedule your visit without mistaking the market for a daily offering. Together with the museum, estuary and routes described, Batemans Bay offers several specific themes to help guide your travel planning.
