Adaminaby: Highlands, History and Recreation
Accommodation in Adaminaby
Adaminaby is set among the gently rolling high plains of the Snowy Mountains region in New South Wales. If you’re looking for a hotel in Adaminaby, local history, art and outdoor activities may play a part in choosing your destination. A museum and a heritage trail offer an insight into the town’s history; Lake Eucumbene, a golf course and winter activities appeal to other interests. From Adaminaby, you can travel to Selwyn Snow Resort to ski, go tobogganing or snowboarding, or enjoy snow rides. Check the resort’s operating conditions and road conditions before setting out.
Local History and the Snowy Scheme
Adaminaby was established as a planned community in the early 1960s to accommodate residents displaced by the construction of Lake Eucumbene. Another historical connection is at the site of the old town: the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme was officially opened there on 17 October 1949. The town’s history therefore spans different periods—the opening of the Scheme in 1949 and the establishment of the planned community in the early 1960s.
The Snowy Scheme Museum focuses on the achievements of the Snowy Scheme workers and their families. Its historically significant collection includes more than 6,000 objects. The museum offers a tangible way to learn about the project’s history and the people whose achievements it celebrates.
Heritage Trail, Art and Local Life
The self-guided Adaminaby Heritage Trail passes through the historic residential and cultural centre of the community and includes seven stops. The Adaminaby Town Walk takes approximately 40 minutes. For the Town Walk, the approximate duration is a guide to the time required; for the Heritage Trail, the seven stops and historic town centre provide the route.
Adaminaby’s Big Trout is a 10-metre-high fibreglass sculpture designed by local artist Andy Lominici. Barbecue facilities, a playground and public toilets are located near the sculpture. The curtain at Adaminaby School of Arts and Community Hall was designed by local artists James Meverley and Barbara Gough. It depicts Adaminaby, Lake Eucumbene and the mountains. The Adaminaby Curtain can be viewed by calling the Hall Manager to arrange an appointment; arrange your visit before you arrive.
The community-run Old Post Office Arts and Crafts sells locally made art, crafts and photographs. Together with the Heritage Trail and the two artworks, it offers a glimpse of the town’s different cultural aspects: its local history, designed artworks and locally made products.
Fishing and Other Activities
Fly fishing, spin fishing, trolling and bait fishing are possible around Adaminaby and Lake Eucumbene. Fishing tackle, boat hire and fishing charters are also available in the area. Check the availability of these services before your trip if you would like to include them in your plans.
The Adaminaby Golf Course is a unique nine-hole course in the High Country. Flights can be arranged at Adaminaby Kennedy Airfield to see the landscape from the air; confirm current availability in advance. The town also has a public swimming pool with a large shaded toddler pool and a main pool. Opening may vary by season, so it’s advisable to check current conditions before visiting.
