Imperial monuments in Huế, the Perfume River, the Tam Giang–Cầu Hai lagoon system and the coast of Lăng Cô give Thua Thien-Hue a variety of travel highlights. Historic sites sit alongside nature and coastal experiences. To help plan your trip, first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Huế: Monuments and history

From 1802 to 1945, Huế was the political, cultural and religious center of a unified Vietnam under the Nguyễn dynasty. The citadel contained the imperial residence, the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City and other royal palaces. The Complex of Huế Monuments was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1993. The tombs of Minh Mạng and Khải Định are part of this complex.

The Perfume River and Ngu Bình Mountain form the natural setting for the monuments; the imperial tombs lie upstream along the river. The Thien Mu Pagoda is also an associated monument in the complex, located outside the capital city there. Its Phước-Duyên Tower was built between 1844 and 1846 at the behest of King Thiệu Trị and is seven stories high. The pagoda complex is one of the most revered sites in Huế.

Further examples of Nguyễn-dynasty architecture can be seen at An-Định Palace: this early-20th-century architectural and artistic landmark lies on the An Cựu River in Huế’s Phú Nhuận ward. The Lục-Bộ Culture Exhibition Space is a recognized tourist attraction at 79 Nguyễn-Chí-Diễu Street in Đông Ba ward. The Nguyễn-Chí-Thanh Museum displays nearly 400 documents, artifacts and images, including many original items used by General Nguyễn Chí Thanh during his lifetime.

Lagoons, mountains and coast

The Tam Giang–Cầu Hai system is considered the largest lagoon system in Southeast Asia. Đầm Chuồn is a brackish-water lagoon within the Tam Giang system. After exploring the lagoon, visitors can enjoy local specialties in a floating house. Which houses and dishes are available may vary; ask locally about current offerings.

Another natural area is Bạch-Mã Mountain in Phú Lộc District. It reaches 1,444 meters and has streams and waterfalls, including Đỗ-Quyên Waterfall. On Lăng Cô Bay, below Hải-Vân Pass, an almost untouched beach has clear water and a diverse ecosystem. Mountains, lagoon and coast offer different ways to experience the area, so you do not have to limit your trip to just one type of natural scenery.

Getting around: mangroves, boats and cycling routes

In Ru Cha Mangrove Forest, you can walk or cycle along the mangrove trail. The forest is home to thousands of animal and plant species. Visitors can also hire a small wooden boat with a boat operator to explore Ru Cha; check boat availability locally. If you are planning another bike ride, the route to the covered Thanh-Toàn Bridge offers a different landscape, passing vegetable fields, footbridges and flocks of ducks.

Visitors reach Trúc Lâm Bạch Mã Monastery by small boat across Truồi Lake. As boat services should be checked locally, it is worth checking them before setting out. Another suggested nature activity is the “Hoàng hôn phá Tam Giang” tour, part of Thừa Thiên Huế’s ecotours; check before your trip whether it is currently offered.

Cuisine and getting there

Huế cuisine also includes imperial dishes, served as part of elaborate multi-course menus. Huế-style bánh khoái offers a different, distinctive taste: it comes with a fresh salad of figs, star fruit and cucumber, as well as a thick sauce made from peanuts and pork liver. These two examples offer different pointers if you would also like to plan your trip around local cuisine.

Phú Bài Airport is about a 30-minute drive from Huế. The “Connecting Central Heritage” train links Huế and Đà Nẵng; two pairs of trains are listed, numbered HD1/2 and HD3/4. Check current train services before your trip. This way, you can choose your destination based on the activities that interest you most.
