Thai Nguyen: Tea, Culture and Lakes
Accommodation in Thai Nguyen
Thai Nguyen offers a variety of travel experiences: tea culture, historic memorial sites, and landscapes with lakes and caves. If you are looking for hotels in Thai Nguyen, you can start planning around the themes that matter to you. The following places and experiences give you concrete ideas to help you do so.
Experience Tea and Local Culture
In the community-based tourism area of Tan Cuong commune, visitors can pick tea and enjoy it in a special setting. Traditional knowledge about growing and processing Tan Cuong tea is recognized as Vietnam's national intangible cultural heritage. Both the visitor activity and this inherited knowledge are part of the region's tea culture.
You can also pick and taste tea around Ghềnh Chè Lake. There, you can combine the tea experience with a stay amid waterside scenery: the lake covers more than 90 hectares of water and has around 45 larger and smaller islands and peninsulas. At Mỏ Gà's tourism offerings, visitors can also sample local specialties such as Khâu nhục and wild vegetables at homestays. The dishes on offer may vary depending on the participating homestay.
Memorial Sites and Cultural Heritage
The Museum of the Cultures of Vietnam's Ethnic Groups in Thai Nguyen preserves more than 40,000 original documents and artifacts relating to the traditional cultures of Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups. It offers a cultural focus distinct from the region's historic memorial sites.
From 1946 to 1954, ATK Dinh Hoa was where Ho Chi Minh, the Party Central Committee, and the government lived and worked during the resistance against French colonial rule. The ATK Dinh Hoa Historical Relic Complex is a particularly significant national relic, with 182 relic sites. In a different historical context, the National Memorial Site commemorates the 60 fallen youth volunteers of Company 915, Team 91 Bac Thai, in Gia Sang ward.
On Đồi Thành Trúc, the restored and upgraded memorial site of President Ho Chi Minh's 1954 residence and workplace was opened for educational and cultural tourism activities on December 9, 2025. Thai Hai Nature Reserve also focuses on cultural heritage: its ecovillage, with traditional stilt houses, is shaped by Tay and Nung culture and received the World Tourism Organization's “Best Tourism Villages 2022” award. In Mỏ Gà, 13 households preserve traditional Tay stilt houses; visitors can experience Then singing and performances on the Tính lute there.
Lakes, Caves, and Outdoor Activities
The Nui Coc Lake tourist area covers a water surface of about 25 square kilometers and has 89 large and small islands. Ghềnh Chè Lake is smaller, but its islands and peninsulas also create distinctive waterside scenery. Visitors can explore the small islands by boat, fish, camp, and picnic there. Activities at the lake range from boat trips to spending time on the shore.
The Phuong Hoang ecotourism area is a cave tourism destination on the border between Lang Son and Thai Nguyen provinces. The climb to Phuong Hoang Cave can involve more than 1,200 stone steps and take about an hour. Access conditions may vary by season, so check them before your visit. On the eastern slope of the Tam Dao Mountains, young people can sign up for trekking trips. These include mountain climbing, boating, waterfall slides, sightseeing, or swimming.
