Ninh Bình: Karst Landscapes, Wetlands and History
Accommodation in Ninh Bình
Karst formations, underground waterways and traces of culture shape the range of experiences available in Ninh Bình. The Trang An Landscape Complex is a mixed cultural and natural heritage site within Ninh Binh Province. Its karst cones and towers are connected by underground waterways, some of which can be explored in small boats. In certain places, the water itself becomes part of the natural experience.
Experience wetlands and forests
Another natural area is the Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve in Gia Vien. It covers more than 3,000 hectares and lies about 17 kilometers north of Ninh Bình city center. Its diverse wetland ecosystem is home to the Delacour's langur, an endemic primate under protection. This means that Van Long is defined by its wetlands and the protected status of one of its species, while Trang An is characterized by karst formations and underground waterways.
Cuc Phuong National Park offers another perspective on nature. Established in 1962, it spans the provinces of Ninh Binh, Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa. Its tropical rainforest is home to 2,234 species of higher plants, 122 reptile species, 2,000 insect species and 336 resident bird species; future surveys may change these figures. Possible activities include hiking and cycling through the old-growth forest, nocturnal wildlife watching, and observing reptiles, amphibians and insects. Options range from forest excursions to night-time wildlife watching.
Boat trips, views and climbs
Tam Coc–Bich Dong is located in Nam Hoa Lu Commune and is a highlight within the Trang An Landscape Complex. Visitors can take a boat trip on the Ngo Dong River in the area. At Thung Nắng, visitors travel in small boats with local rowers along the 2.6-kilometer route on the Đền Vối River. The two experiences can be distinguished by their rivers: the Ngo Dong at Tam Coc–Bich Dong and the Đền Vối at Thung Nắng.
Hang Mua complements boat trips with a climb: 500 steps lead to a viewpoint overlooking rivers, rice fields and limestone outcrops. Here, the uphill route makes for a different visit from a trip on the water.
History and cultural heritage
Hoa Lu was Vietnam's capital in the 10th and 11th centuries. Karst landscapes and rivers provided natural protection against invasions. The Hoa Lu Festival is held annually in the Ancient Capital of Hoa Lu and is Vietnam's national intangible cultural heritage. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the dates for your stay.
Phat Diem Stone Cathedral is a national historical and cultural monument and a visitor attraction. The Bai Dinh Buddhist Temple Complex is also among the cultural destinations to visit in Ninh Bình. Its ancient cave temples can be reached by climbing 300 steps. You can plan visits to historical sites and religious attractions as a distinct focus alongside nature and water experiences.
Getting there and planning your trip
You can travel from Hanoi to Ninh Bình by coach, limousine, train or private vehicle. For visitors staying in Tam Coc, cycling is one way to get around. These themes provide a framework for your search and help you plan your trip according to your interests.
