Nghệ An can be explored through a wide range of experiences: protected landscapes in the west, memorial sites and museums, and activities along rivers and the coast. The focus you choose will shape your trip, from observing nature to learning about history and local traditions.

Nature between mountains, forests and water

Pù Mát National Park lies in western Nghệ An. It forms the core zone of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO. The reserve includes three core areas, including one national park and two nature reserves. The figures also illustrate the diversity of its natural environment: the national park is home to 2,500 plant species and almost 1,000 animal species; the biosphere reserve is home to 295 bird species, including 22 species threatened or endangered worldwide.

One of the national park’s notable natural landmarks is Khe Kèm Waterfall. It is located in the park’s core zone and cascades down three tiers in front of pristine forest. Visitors can enjoy the cool natural surroundings at the waterfall and follow a trail toward its summit. Also in the national park, visitors can see a stand of mature Săng-lẻ trees covering about 100 hectares in Tam Đình Commune. The waterfall, forest and stand of trees offer different perspectives on nature in the protected area.

Natural contrasts also shape the experience beyond the national park. Hang Mó in Thái Minh preserves its ecosystem and features diverse stalactite formations for visitors to see. Bãi Lữ brings the sea and mountain forest together: mountains meet the coast here, while the sea reaches deep inland. Cửa Hội, meanwhile, is a flat, relatively unspoiled beach, with the Song Ngư Islands lying offshore.

Memorial sites and collections

The Kim Liên Memorial Site comprises the Hoàng Trù and Làng Sen memorial complexes. It preserves documents, artifacts and cultural-historical spaces connected with Hồ Chí Minh’s birthplace, family and youth, as well as with his two visits to his homeland. On May 10, 2012, the memorial site was classified as a special national relic of Vietnam.

The Phan Bội Châu Memorial Site in Nam Đàn offers a different historical focus. Its two memorial locations are about 1.5 kilometers apart. The exhibition house displays hundreds of historical photographs, original artifacts, and scholarly and artistic documents about his life and work for national liberation. The memorial site was classified as a special national historical relic by government decision on December 22, 2016. The two sites therefore differ both in the historical figures they commemorate and in how they present them.

The Nghệ An Museum preserves 31,327 historically and culturally significant artifacts. Three of its national treasures were officially recognized in 2017. The Cultural Museum of Ethnic Groups in Quỳ Châu District, by contrast, focuses on models of traditional Thái stilt houses and Thái script. These serve research into local history and ethnography in the mountainous region of Nghệ An.

Festivals and local activities

Đền Cờn was built during the Trần Dynasty and is dedicated to the Tứ vị Thánh nương. The Đền Cờn Festival is listed as a national intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam. It takes place every year from the 19th to the 21st day of the first lunar month and includes religious ceremonies, a procession, communal rites at Đền Cờn Ngoài and folk games. The Đền Cửa Festival follows a different schedule: it takes place every year on the third day of the third lunar month and features traditional games and performances. If you plan your trip around either festival, check the lunar calendar dates for the year in question.

Visitors can go kayaking and ride a dual zipline at the Phà Lài eco-tourism area on the Giăng River. The river is also described as offering boat trips upstream through rapids; river conditions vary. Check the current availability of activities before visiting Phà Lài.

Community-run experiences offer a different focus. In Bản Xiềng, visitors can tour a brocade-weaving village and try their hand at a loom. In Thái Minh, community-based tourism includes learning about life in traditional stilt houses, Rượu cần, and local songs and dances. Eo Gió Eco-Experience Garden combines high-tech agroforestry production with an experimental farm system where visitors can learn and gain practical experience. For these visits, it is advisable to confirm local arrangements in advance.

On the coast, nature and regional cuisine come together: at Cửa Hội Beach, visitors can eat local seafood, including the specialty Mực nhảy. At Diễn Thành Beach, they can collect clams with local fishers.
