Tân An City: Culture and History
Accommodation in Tân An City
When planning your trip to Tân An City, the cultural sites in the associated district offer several historical points of interest. They range from communal houses and temples to exhibitions about the history of Long An Province. Annual festivals are also part of the picture: their dates follow the lunar calendar.
Historic Buildings and Their Stories
Nhà Tổng Thận was built around 1892–1893 in the style of a French villa. Following its restoration in 2013, it retains the stately character of this architecture. Inside, the house is furnished in the Vietnamese style. Models recreate important meetings of the Tân An Provincial Party Committee; pictures and objects illustrate the way of life and everyday routines of Tân An’s former residents. Thus, different aspects of history come together in one building: its architecture, its political use and its portrayal of daily life at the time.
After the victory of the August Revolution, Nhà Tổng Thận was taken over by the provisional government and used for public purposes. It was selected as the first publicly used headquarters of the Tân An Provincial Party Committee and serves to pass on revolutionary traditions to younger generations in Long An Province and southern Vietnam. This also makes the house interesting to travelers wishing to learn about the region’s political history.
Đình Khánh Hậu is a village communal house dedicated to Thành Hoàng bổn cảnh, the local guardian deity. It was built around the beginning of the 19th century and is considered evidence of land reclamation and settlement development in Khánh Hậu. The communal house served religious and community purposes. In 1945, it was the site where the Thanh niên Tiền phong was founded and trained before setting out to take part in the uprising in Tân An Province.
Another communal religious building, Đình Bình Lập, was built around the first half of the 19th century. Its traditional southern Vietnamese architecture comprises three sections: võ ca, chánh điện and hậu đình. It also features a Tứ-Trụ structure. The building preserves cultural elements of a southern Vietnamese village communal house, as well as historical and cultural documents and objects from the 19th century. Its three sections and Tứ-Trụ structure offer a tangible insight into the construction of this type of building.
Temples and Cultural Exchange
Quan Thánh Đế miếu, also known as miếu Trung Nghĩa, was established in the 19th century by the Hoa community with support from Vietnamese residents. It has characteristic features of Chinese architecture. Inside, the temple preserves two groups of Quan Công figures, a figure of the Holy Mother and a figure of Bổn Đầu Công. Glass, fabric and paper paintings, as well as other objects of artistic and cultural-historical value, complete the collection. Quan Thánh Đế miếu is a temple of the Hoa community that also reflects Vietnamese cultural elements; for several decades, it has represented cultural exchange between the Vietnamese and Hoa populations in Ward 1.
Quan Thánh Đế, Thiên Hậu and Quan Phủ stand next to one another, with Quan Thánh Đế miếu in the middle. A small entrance gate with three openings offers a view of the Bảo Định River and leads to the three ancient temples. Major ceremonies in honor of Quan Công are held annually at Quan Thánh Đế miếu. Charitable and social welfare activities are also organized there.
The Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức Memorial Complex is also a place to visit and study historic architecture, attracting visitors from Vietnam and abroad. The complex includes a gate, a tomb, a temple dedicated to Kiến Xương Quận công Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức, and a building for displaying documents. Lăng Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức is one of the oldest surviving historic structures in Long An and has been preserved almost intact.
Museum, Park and Annual Festivals
Long An Museum is located in Tân An City. It displays numerous objects relating to the province’s history, culture and natural environment. It complements the historic buildings and temples with a broader perspective on Long An: alongside individual sites and their respective histories, the province’s culture and nature are also in focus here.
Construction of Công viên Tượng đài Long An, which covers more than 6 hectares, began in 2005, and the park was inaugurated on April 28, 2010. The cultural park is a place to visit and relax, and presents the history of the resistance of Long An’s land and people. Its exhibition covers eight themes relating to notable achievements and defining events in the resistance against the United States.
Four important festivals are held each year at Đình Khánh Hậu. Chạp Miễu Ức is observed on the 15th and 16th days of the 12th lunar month, and Cầu An on the 15th, 16th and 17th days of the 4th lunar month. Hạ Điền falls on the 16th day of the 6th lunar month, and Thượng Điền on the 16th day of the 10th lunar month. Local authorities and many residents take part in the festivals. Since these dates are given according to the lunar calendar, it is best to check the festival date for the relevant year when planning your trip. If you are planning a specific visit, check the visiting conditions for the site in advance.
