Gia Lai in Vietnam brings together the landscapes of a high plateau, protected forest areas, a historical memorial site and a vibrant gong culture. T’Nung Lake lies in an extinct volcanic crater; waterfalls, a national park and a nature reserve offer other perspectives on the region. Regional dishes and cultural events are also among the themes that can shape your travel plans.

Plateau, Crater Lake and Waterfalls

Gia Lai lies on a plateau with an average elevation of 700 to 800 metres above sea level. In summer, it is considerably cooler here than on the coastal plains. The dry season lasts from November to April; the exact weather can vary from year to year.

T’Nung Lake, also known as Bien Ho, is located in an extinct volcanic crater. It is poetically known as the “Eye of Pleiku.” The crater lake thus combines a specific geological feature with a name that refers to Pleiku.

Phú Cường Waterfall is about 45 metres high. Its water falls into the La Peet stream, which flows into the Ayun River; conditions along the watercourse vary by season. The waterfall is located in the Phú Cường quarry area, in Dun Commune, Chư Sê District. It is about 3 kilometres from Chư Sê and around 45 kilometres from Pleiku. Administrative names and distances may change if boundaries or roads change.

Forest Areas and Wildlife

Kon Chư Răng Nature Reserve is one of the two core zones of the Kon Hà Nừng Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO. In 2021, more than 60 percent of Kon Chư Răng Nature Reserve consisted of productive or primary forests. The protected area is also known for its documented biodiversity: 1,602 animal and plant species and 66 species of ascomycetes have been recorded.

Kon Ka Kinh National Park is also home to endangered species, including the yellow-cheeked gibbon, the douc langur and the Truong Son muntjac. The wildlife of the two protected areas makes nature a distinct focus of your trip: Kon Chư Răng stands for forest areas and documented biodiversity, while Kon Ka Kinh is home to endangered mammals.

History, Gong Culture and Village Communities

Cứ điểm 42 Biển Hồ–1972 is a historical monument recognised at provincial level in Biển Hồ Commune. It lies east of National Highway 14 and more than 10 kilometres north of Pleiku city centre. The large fortified military base, with several rows of fencing, bunkers, trenches and artillery bunkers, formed part of a layered defence system.

Incense offerings and commemorative events are held at the memorial site on public holidays, during Tết, on 27 July and on the annual anniversary of the battle. Check the exact dates and public visiting conditions before your visit. This helps distinguish the site's historical significance from its recurring commemorative occasions.

Gia Lai is an important custodian of the gong cultural space. In the villages, Bron gongs accompany traditional dances. Rong houses serve as venues for village councils, sacred rituals and community festivals. At the Wildflower Festival at Chư Đang Ya Volcano, the programme takes place at the Rong house in Ia Gri Village: it includes gong exchanges, brocade-weaving demonstrations, rice wine tasting and community activities by the Jrai and Bahnar. The festival programme may change from one edition to the next, so check the latest event dates and schedule.

Coffee, Regional Cuisine and Getting There

Gia Lai is one of Vietnam’s leading coffee-growing regions; coffee from Pleiku is highly regarded throughout the country. Regional dishes include grilled chicken with sticky rice cooked in bamboo tubes and dry pho. The latter is called Pho Hai To or “Two-Bowl Pho.” The preparation and availability of dishes may vary by establishment.

Pleiku Airport offers daily flights from Đà Nẵng and Ho Chi Minh City. Flight routes and frequencies may change, so check current flight schedules against your travel dates. When planning your hotel stay, you can also consider which themes matter most to you: nature areas, the monument, gong culture or regional cuisine.
