Nakhon Thai District: Temples and Nature
Accommodation in Nakhon Thai District
A recurring ritual, ancient temples, and distinctive landscapes give Nakhon Thai District a character that cannot be reduced to a single type of excursion. In Amphoe Nakhon Thai, the tradition of raising victory flags on Mount Chang Luang continues every year on the 14th and 15th days of the twelfth lunar month. Alongside this are places of religious devotion and natural features shaped by forests, rock, and water. For your trip planning, it is worth organizing these different highlights and then deciding which experiences you would like to focus on.
Victory Flag Tradition on Mount Chang Luang
Mount Chang Luang, also known as Khao Pak Thong Chai, is located in Tambon Nakhon Thai and reaches approximately 600 to 700 meters above sea level. It is associated with the tradition of raising victory flags, which continues in the district every year on the aforementioned dates in the twelfth lunar month. The area's cultural rhythm is therefore tied to a particular time in the lunar calendar rather than a fixed date in the Western calendar.
At the victory flag ceremony documented on November 15, 2567, a 3.5-kilometer uphill walking route led to Mount Chang Luang.
Temples, a Buddha Image, and the Champaka Tradition
Wat Na Phra That, also called Wat Nuea, is an ancient temple believed to have been built around 1825 BE. The temple houses Luang Pho Phet, a stone Buddha image in the Dvaravati style. Devotees regularly visit Wat Na Phra That to make merit and pay homage to Luang Pho Phet. The temple's history, its Buddha image, and its living religious practices are distinct yet closely connected aspects of the place.
Another religious and botanical tradition is associated with Wat Klang. The white champak tree beside the temple, which is several hundred years old, is said to be the tree planted by Phokhun Bang Klang Thao; visitors use it as a place of worship. Wat Klang itself is also considered the original location of the white champaka variety จำปาขาว. Those interested in local lore will find that, in addition to the temples, a plant species and a revered tree are subjects in their own right.
Sea of Clouds, Rock Formations, and Waterfalls
At Rong Khao Nakhon Chum Recreational Forest, there is an opportunity to see a sea of clouds during the winter season or around the end of the year, at about 5:00 to 5:30 a.m. Lan Hin Taek offers a different highlight: its rock surface covers approximately 40 rai and is crossed by cracks that resemble a split-open earth's surface.
At Kaeng Ton Waterfall, the landscape extends for about 800 meters across broad rock surfaces. Small rapids alternate with a gentler current. The waterfall is located in Ban Pa Po Bid and Ban Kaeng Thung in Tambon Bo Pho and is a community excursion site. Its promotion is linked to the protection of the community forest. Kaeng Ton therefore offers both rock and water features and a look at the connection between an excursion site and forest conservation.
Huai Ta Liao Waterfall in Pong So village, Tambon Nam Kum, is fed by headwaters from Huai Ang. Its water emerges naturally through rock crevices in a mountain range. The surroundings of the Kaeng Hai rafting area, meanwhile, are shaped by the Huai Cham Ru Reservoir: the area is located in Kaeng Hai village in Tambon Nong Kathao and covers approximately 600 rai. These places differ in their main features, from rock surfaces and waterways to a reservoir that provides a backdrop for rafting.
History and Trip Planning
Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park includes part of Amphoe Nakhon Thai. Historical traces and structures from earlier conflicts are preserved there and used for study. This historical connection adds another perspective on the region alongside its religious traditions and natural attractions.
