Ban Laem combines sea salt production with mudflats, mangroves and a strong connection to the coastal environment. Bang Taboon is also home to one of the country’s largest shellfish farming areas. Environmental engineering, religious sites and local traditions round out the area’s profile and offer different themes to consider when planning a trip.

Salt Production and Coastal Culture

Amphoe Ban Laem is considered Thailand’s largest sea salt production area. Salt warehouses line both sides of the road. Bang Kaew Salt Road is a popular photo stop where visitors can experience the lives of salt farmers and watch the sunset. Salt is therefore not just a local product here, but also a defining feature of the coastal landscape.

Mudflats, Mangroves and Environmental Engineering

The coast at Bang Taboon consists mainly of mudflats and has mangrove vegetation. One example of the district’s environmental engineering is the Laem Phak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project. There, wastewater passes through plant-based filtration beds and artificial wetlands before reaching the mangroves and the sea. Seawater and mangrove plants are also used to dilute wastewater at a ratio of 1:16 and accelerate sedimentation.

Whale Watching Throughout the Year

Bryde’s whales are commonly seen from August to November in the coastal waters of the upper Gulf of Thailand, including Bang Taboon Bay and Laem Phak Bia. Hat Chao Samran in Phetchaburi is also among the coastal areas mentioned. This seasonal pattern depends on the weather and food supply; wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. If a whale is with a calf, boats should keep at least 300 metres away and approach from the side. Check local arrangements for activities at Laem Phak Bia before your trip.

Nature Trail, Model Farm and Cycling Route

The mangrove nature trail near Bang Taboon Wittaya School runs along the sea. Young local guides accompany visitors and explain traditional fishing. The Model Sea Farm in Tambon Bang Kaew is designed as a demonstration farm. It offers learning opportunities, facility tours and an exchange of experiences for fishers, aquaculture operators and other interested visitors. The tourist cycling route “Cycling, Fresh Breeze and Salt Fields” also starts at the Model Sea Farm.

Temples and Local Traditions

Wat Khao Takhrao houses Luang Pho Thong, a revered 29-inch-tall Buddha statue. Ceremonies are held on December 19 and May 19 at the shrine of Krom Luang Chumphon, at the mouth of Bang Taboon Bay in Tambon Bang Taboon Ok, Amphoe Ban Laem. This tradition continues to this day.

Food and Directions

In Bang Taboon, restaurants and souvenir shops offer, among other things, blue crabs and fresh and dried seafood to take away. One route to Laem Phak Bia Pier crosses the Bang Taboon River Bridge. After about 8 km, you will reach a traffic light; turn left there, pass the Amphoe Ban Laem administration offices and Ban Khun Sai, then continue for approximately 19 km to the pier on the left.

Phetchaburi as a Broader Travel Destination

The wider Phetchaburi destination also features historic sites and a recurring festival. Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park is a major ancient monument spread across three hills; the three peaks combine Western neoclassical and Chinese architectural elements. Phra Nakhon Khiri National Museum displays royal objects used by King Rama IV and King Rama V, bronze and brass statues, and ceramics from China, Japan and Europe.

The Phra Nakhon Khiri–Mueang Phet Festival is an annual tradition in Phetchaburi. It begins on the first Friday in February and lasts for ten days and ten nights. The festival includes demonstrations of how savoury and sweet dishes are prepared.
