Phetchaburi: Cultural Heritage, Forest and Coast
Accommodation in Phetchaburi
Historic sites, forest landscapes and varied coastlines shape the travel experience in Phetchaburi. The contrast is especially clear between the white sandy beaches of Cha-am, which stretch for several kilometres, and Bang Tabun, whose coastline consists mostly of mudflats rather than sand. The places that interest you for your stay therefore also depend on whether you want to focus on culture, nature or coastal scenery.
Landscapes of Forest, Cave and Coast
The Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex forms a continuous forest landscape across parts of Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. Rugged mountains and hilly terrain shape the area; it is also home to six types of forest. Its expanse across three provinces is an important part of the landscape: the forest complex does not belong to Phetchaburi alone.
Tham Khao Luang offers a different natural setting: a cave in Phetchaburi with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. On the coast at Bang Tabun, a bridge connects Bang Tabun with Bang Tabun Ok. It serves as a viewpoint from which the estuary area is clearly visible. In Cha-am, meanwhile, the beaches take centre stage, with their white sand and stretches of several kilometres; the town also offers various water activities.
Historic Sites and Cultural Highlights
Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park is a significant ancient monument set across three hills in Phetchaburi. Its architecture combines Western neoclassical and Chinese elements, distributed across the three hilltops. The park can be reached on foot or by electric cable car. Check the cable car’s current schedule before your visit.
The Phra Nakhon Khiri National Museum houses exhibits from a range of areas: personal items used by Kings Rama IV and Rama V, bronze and brass statues, and ceramics from China, Japan and Europe. As well as architecture, the focus is therefore on objects and collections. Those interested in art and history can find another learning centre at Wat Yai Suwannaram, which is dedicated to these subjects as well as handicrafts.
Maruekhathaiyawan Palace is a historic site of artistic and historical value. It was built at the request of King Rama VI as a seasonal royal residence. The palace’s history is therefore distinct from that of Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park: here, its function as a royal residence takes centre stage, while there, the focus is on architecture spread across three hilltops.
Unique Experiences and Local Traditions
Phetchaburi offers visitors several hands-on experiences. At Boonthida Farm in Amphoe Ban Laem, visitors can learn about sea grape cultivation and observe the individual growing stages. In the Ban Tham Suea Community, visitors can make seed balls and launch them with a slingshot into the community’s forest area. They can also prepare Khanom Thong Muan, a Thai sweet and a well-known souvenir from the village.
The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park in Cha-am is a learning centre for energy, natural resources and environmental protection. The Thulakham Mangrove Forest is part of the park. The Princess planted it in 1994; today, the mangrove forest is considered lush and beautiful. Environmental education is an attraction in its own right here, alongside the forest and coastal landscape.
A 2020 contribution by the Tourism Authority of Thailand describes boat trips to observe Bryde’s whales departing from Amphoe Ban Laem, particularly from October to January or from the end of the rainy season. If you plan one of these trips, check the operators and season again before travelling.
The annual Phra Nakhon Khiri–Mueang Phet Festival begins on the first Friday in February and lasts for ten days and ten nights. The festival also includes demonstrations of how savoury and sweet dishes are prepared. Another distinctive feature of the region is the small Namtok Kwangchow Floating Market in the forest by Namtok Kwangchow waterfall in Nong Ya Plong District.
