Wat Mahachai preserves a large earthen mound, where the ashes of three former rulers of Nakhon Khuean Khan Kab Kaew Bua Ban are believed to have been buried. The temple was formerly known as Wat Mahathat Traiyaphum and is located in Lam Phu Subdistrict. The religious heritage also includes two Phra Bang Buddha statues, considered important antiquities. Both the tradition surrounding the mound and Buddhist art are central to this site.
Temple history and Buddhist art
Wat Si Khun Mueang is considered an ancient temple. It is thought to have been built during a period when Khmer, Lawa, and Lao people lived in this area. The remains of an old ordination hall and stone boundary markers have been preserved. The temple is also home to Phra Chaiyachettha, a Buddha statue in the Lan Xang style. It stands in a reliquary whose design is similar to that of Phra That Si Song Rak. The two temples have distinct features: Wat Si Khun Mueang brings together archaeological remains and a particular work of art, while Wat Mahachai combines a large mound with important Buddha images.
Fossil discoveries in Ban Huai Duea
In Ban Huai Duea, in Non Than Subdistrict, there is a museum dedicated to 150-million-year-old shell fossils and dinosaur discoveries from Non Than. The dinosaur fossil building displays finds from northeastern Thailand, including dinosaur bones and footprints discovered in Non Than. Both the fossils and their regional origins are in focus. Visitors wishing to include cultural sites and natural history in their travel plans will find a different focus here than at the temples: instead of religious art and architectural remains, the exhibits are about fossil discoveries and how they are presented.
Mountains, a park, and a market
Phu Phan Noi is an eco-tourism area in the Phu Phan mountain range, in Ban Phu Phan Thong, Nong Bua Subdistrict. It has campsites with basic facilities for overnight stays. This offers a distinct travel-planning option: the focus here is on an excursion area and overnight stays at campsites, while the temples and museum offer other thematic destinations.
Nong Bua Public Park is a large pond in front of the Mueang Nong Bua Lamphu District Office, with water year-round. Nong Bua residents use the park in the evenings to relax, go for walks, and enjoy the scenery and surrounding nature. Huai Duea Market offers another way to get a sense of local life: it is a fresh market by Highway 210 in Ban Huai Duea, in Non Than Subdistrict, about 11 kilometers from the district’s administrative center. The park is a place to relax in the evening, while the market is a specific spot along the highway in Ban Huai Duea.
