Nong Bua Lam Phu: Mountains, Caves and History
Accommodation in Nong Bua Lam Phu
In Nong Bua Lam Phu, striking rocky landscapes meet caves, archaeological evidence and vibrant craft traditions. This makes the region an interesting destination for a trip focused on nature and culture. Each destination has a different focus, from viewpoints and prehistoric traces to fossils, temple museums and local handicrafts.
Rocky landscapes and views at Phu Kao
Phu Kao–Phu Phan Kham National Park is located in Non Sang District. Phu Kao features forest, habitats for numerous wildlife species, caves, waterfalls, rocky areas and unusual rock formations. The caves of Phu Kao also contain paintings and engravings made by prehistoric people. Here, the landscape is connected with traces of early human activity.
The Chong Khao Khat Skywalk is located within the national park. The glass bridge is 16 meters wide and 21 meters long. From here, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the Ubolratana Reservoir; at sunset, the clear view extends to the ridge of Phu Kao. Tao-Toe Waterfall Forest Park, on Highway 210 in Nong Bua Lam Phu, offers a different experience: this shady recreation area is characterized by diverse trees and rocks of various shapes.
Caves with distinct features
Erawan Cave in Na Wang District is reached by climbing more than 600 steps from the foot of the mountain to the cave entrance. A large Buddha statue at the entrance makes a strong first impression. Inside, notable features include a spacious chamber that can hold several hundred people and a passage leading to a rock face overlooking the fields. The stairway and views across the landscape make the visit a distinct highlight among the region’s caves.
Temples, museums and archaeological evidence
Wat Tham Klong Phen is a well-known forest temple at the foot of the Phu Phan mountain range in Mueang Nong Bua Lamphu District. Its museum preserves the ashes and personal religious belongings of Luang Pu Khao Anālayo. A wax museum is also dedicated to Luang Pu Khao Anālayo: the building is designed to resemble three rocks stacked on top of one another and features a seated wax figure for worship.
Wat Tham Suwannakhuha is also registered as an archaeological monument. It contains antiquities and a statue of King Chai Chetthathirath of Vientiane. The archaeological site of Non Phrao contains evidence dating from prehistoric times through the Dvaravati and Lan Xang periods; its age is estimated at about 2,500 years. Non Wat Pa is another ancient site. The remains found there include a stone Buddha protected by a Naga, as well as finds attributed to Khmer art from its heyday.
The Museum of 150-Million-Year-Old Shell Fossils and Dinosaur Fossils displays Late Jurassic shell fossils found in Ban Huai Duea, as well as dinosaur bones and footprints from Tambon Non Than, including finds from Ban Huai Duea. Exhibitions cover topics ranging from the universe and solar system to the origin of life, evolution, dinosaurs and fossils. The museum is located in Tambon Non Than, on the grounds of the Non Than Tambon Administration, about 25 kilometers north of the provincial capital. The selection also includes vegetables grown with low pesticide use and red ant eggs; availability may vary by season.
Wat Suwannaram’s moral community in Suwannakhuha District was selected in 2024 as a model community for community-based tourism. Visitors can take part in ceremonies and learning experiences, and work with residents to develop products based on traditional local knowledge. Confirm specific programs in advance. The Erawan Cave Mountain Festival is an annual tradition for the people of Na Wang District and Nong Bua Lamphu Province.
