Mukdahan offers different ways to explore its landscape and culture: Ho Kaeo Mukdahan offers views over the city and the Mekong, Kaeng Kabao shows the river as a boundary, and Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park is home to natural attractions with prehistoric traces. There are also exhibitions on Mukdahan’s history and communities, as well as recommendations for local dishes.

City Views, the Mekong and Exhibitions

Ho Kaeo Mukdahan is a 65.50-meter-high concrete tower. From there, you can enjoy views over Mukdahan city, the Mekong and Savannakhet on the Lao side of the river. The view therefore takes in not only the city but also the river and the place on the opposite bank. If you want to get to know Mukdahan through its views, this is a distinctive place to visit.

At the base of Ho Kaeo Mukdahan, exhibitions present the way of life of Mukdahan’s eight ethnic groups, life on both banks of the Mekong and the city’s history. The topics connect local history with everyday life along the river. Mukdahan is home to eight different ethnic minorities; the exhibition highlights this diversity as well as the connections between both banks.

The Mekong as a Border and Place to Explore

Kaeng Kabao is in Ban Na Kae Noi, Pong Kham, Wan Yai, Mukdahan. The village of Kaeng Kabao is opposite, on the Lao side; here, the Mekong forms the border. The site is used for relaxation, family activities and swimming. Visitors who go into the water can rent inner tubes. Check before your visit whether rentals are available.

The Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge also has a clear cross-border connection: it is the border crossing between Mukdahan and Savannakhet. Together with the view from Ho Kaeo and the location of Kaeng Kabao, it brings different connections across the Mekong into view. The bridge, the viewpoint and the riverside site are each distinct points of interest in Mukdahan.

Nature and Rock Art in Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park

Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park is a natural attraction in Pa Rai, Don Tan, Mukdahan. The park has the approximately 500-meter-long Phu Pha Taem Nature Trail. Phu Pha Taem, a cliff face with handprints and prehistoric rock paintings, is also located in the national park. Nature and archaeological traces can be found side by side here, so a visit need not focus on just one theme.

Another distinctive landscape feature can be found at the summit of Phu Sa Dok Bua: there are eleven rock pools, approximately two to three meters wide. They hold water year-round and are covered with small lotus plants. The approximate width, number of pools and their water levels give this natural feature a distinctive character. Alongside the Mekong, Mukdahan also offers a landscape shaped by pools of water and lotus plants.

Food and Ideas for Your Trip

Khao Piak, Vietnamese Kuai Chap, rice porridge and blood curry are recommended at the Five-Way Intersection of the Vietnamese community in Mukdahan. This gives you a specific culinary starting point for planning your trip, alongside viewpoints, the river and nature. Individual vendors and menus may change.
