Trang: Coast, Islands and History
Accommodation in Trang
Coast, Islands and Underwater World
Trang combines a long Andaman coastline with island and beach scenery, nature trails and historic sites. The coastal province has 199 kilometres of coastline along the Andaman Sea. Hat Chao Mai National Park extends across the Kantang and Sikao districts. Its landscape includes limestone areas, mangroves, seagrass, islands and around 20 kilometres of coastline.
At Pak Meng Beach, a crescent-shaped beach about five kilometres long stretches alongside natural pine groves. Ko Kradan offers fine white sand and clear water; coral and sea fan reefs lie along the coast. Ko Muk is known for its sandy beaches. Tham Morakot, also called Morakot Cave, takes its name from the emerald-green water inside the cave.
Ko Chueak and Ko Waen offer opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling over colourful corals in shallow and deeper waters. Sea conditions can vary. Dugongs are more frequently spotted around Ko Libong, but sightings are not guaranteed.
Boat Trips and Nature Experiences
Pak Meng Pier offers day trips by boat to destinations on Trang’s islands. These include Ko Muk with Morakot Cave, Ko Kradan, Ko Chueak and Ko Ngai. Packages can be booked with operators at the pier or in Trang. Operators and schedules can change, so check the latest information when planning. Hat Yao Pier serves as a ferry port for trips to Trang’s islands. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between a day trip from Pak Meng and a ferry ride from Hat Yao.
The Southern Thailand Botanical Garden (Thung Khai) in Yan Ta Khao District has several nature trails through lowland rainforest and peat swamp. In Trang Town Municipality, Sa Kaphang Surin is a natural pool of around 80,000 square metres, surrounded by a public park. Hat Chao Mai National Park has accommodation and campsites for visitors; check current availability before your trip.
In January 2025, a community tourism programme featuring a raft trip was offered in Ban Nam Rap. Check in advance whether the trip is currently running.
History, Craft and Local Traditions
Kantang Railway Station is over 100 years old, the last railway station on the Andaman coast, and registered as an ancient monument. In Kantang Town Municipality, Khuan Tamnak Chan Park preserves a royal residence on a hill, as well as remnants from the Second World War: a cannon, a trench, a bunker and a tunnel.
The Phraya Ratsadanupradit Mahison Phakdi Museum is housed in the former provincial governor of Trang’s two-storey wooden home. Its exhibits include a wax figure and personal belongings. The Na Muen Sri Weaving Museum introduces visitors to the history and tools of local weaving. Check the latest opening arrangements before visiting.
The site known as “First Rubber Tree in Thailand” commemorates a group of trees planted by Phraya Ratsadanupradit in 1899 to promote Thailand’s rubber plantation industry. Another way to explore the region’s history is through the Trang Roast Pork Festival, first held in 1990. The series of events documented through 2022 took place on the first Sunday in September and featured stalls selling Trang roast pork and a parade. Check current dates before planning your trip around the festival.
