River Culture in Satuek District
Satuek District is best explored through the Mun River and the cultural history of its settlements. Ban Tha Ruea in Tha Ruea Subdistrict is an important cultural tourism destination and participates in the OTOP Nawatwithi program; participation in the program may change. Community tourism there includes fishing, boat trips to enjoy the views, and learning about the traditional way of life of residents along the river. These themes offer different perspectives on Ban Tha Ruea: time by the water, the river landscape from a boat, and the life of the local community.
The Mun also shapes other places in Satuek District. Tha Ruea Tha Rak is an important riverside destination where locals and tourists come to relax. On the banks of the Mun, in the park commemorating the 72nd anniversary, stands the Big Buddha (พระพุทธรูปปฏิมาสันตยาภิรมย์สตึกอุดมราษฎร์นิมิตมุนินทร์), opposite the Satuek District administrative building.
Settlement History and Kilns
The archaeological history is also part of Satuek District’s story. Ban Khok Mueang is one of the ancient settlements in the plains near the Mun River identified through aerial photography and archaeological research. Nearby is the Satuek Kiln Site in Ban Dong Yai Pha, about six kilometers west of Satuek District on Huai Takong (Lam Ta Khong). It comprises at least ten kilns and is archaeologically interpreted as an area for producing pottery in the Buriram style. For a themed itinerary, these places can be grouped into two highlights: Ban Tha Ruea represents community tourism by the river, while Ban Khok Mueang and the kiln site foreground archaeological traces.
Buriram: More Cultural and Landscape Themes
The wider destination of Buriram offers other, distinct perspectives. Phanom Rung Historical Park is located on an extinct volcano in Ta Pek, in Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Buri Ram Province. Inscriptions and structural remains suggest that the area around the park had been an ancient settlement since the 15th Buddhist century. The annual ascent to the historical park takes place from April 2 to 4, or on the full moon day of the fifth lunar month. At that time, the first morning light passes through all 15 doorways; check the dates before traveling. In the regional context, Phanom Rung represents a different theme from the riverside communities and settlement traces in Satuek District.
Buriram’s landscape also features volcanic formations. Khao Kradong Forest Park is a recreation area with an ancient volcano and a clearly visible crater. The summit can be reached by climbing a staircase with 297 steps or by car; check current conditions before visiting. Phu Angkhan is a volcanic hill with one large crater and several smaller ones. The descriptions emphasize different features: Khao Kradong offers the option of climbing and a visible crater, while Phu Angkhan features a sequence of craters.
