The ancient city of Panjakent dates from the 5th to the 8th century. It lies on the southeastern edge of modern Panjakent, on the left bank of the Zaravshon River. Sarazm also offers a glimpse into the distant past: the archaeological site spans from the 4th millennium BC to the end of the 3rd millennium BC.

Archaeological Sites and Rudaki Culture

Sarazm illustrates the early development of proto-urbanization in Central Asia and provides evidence of long-distance trade and cultural exchange. Visitors can explore the remains of residential buildings, workshops, temples, and defensive structures. The on-site museum displays archaeological finds such as pottery, tools, jewelry, and household items. If you are planning a visit, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

The Rudaki Historical Museum in Panjakent is named after the Persian poet Abu Abdullah Rudaki. Its exhibits include traditional clothing, handicrafts, and musical instruments, as well as pottery, frescoes, and artifacts from ancient Penjikent. Guided tours are available; check current availability before your visit.

The Rudaki Mausoleum offers a distinctive architectural feature: its structure is polygonal, topped by a hemispherical dome. Red brick walls and blue tiles define its design; the mausoleum also contains a marble sarcophagus. It was fully reconstructed and restored in 2008.

Traditional crafts are also part of Panjakent’s cultural offerings. The Artisan Center in Panjakent showcases Susani and other decorative embroidery, traditional cap-making, tailoring, Chakan embroidery, and weaving. Visitors can also buy the displayed handicrafts at the Artisan Center in Panjakent. If you are interested, check in advance for current exhibitions and purchasing options.

Mountain Lakes and Trails

The Seven Lakes natural complex is near Penjikent and is also known as Haftkul and Marguzor Lakes. The lakes lie in the gorge of the Shing River in the Fann Mountains. The lowest lake is at an elevation of 1,640 meters, and the last is at 2,400 meters. An unpaved road passes all seven lakes; the ascent along the switchbacks takes no more than an hour without breaks. Road conditions can vary, and trekking conditions also change seasonally.

The route to the Seven Lakes includes treks of varying difficulty, crossings of mountain rivers, and climbs over passes. For another mountain hike, a trail leads from the southern end of Lake Marguzor to Tavassang Pass at 3,307 meters, and from there to further hikes in the Fann Mountains.

The Artuch mountaineering and tourism center is located at 2,200 meters in the Urej Gorge of the Fann Mountains. Near Artuch Camp at Lake Chukurak, there is a natural climbing area where climbers of different ages can train. The camp hosts family groups, tourists, and athletes every year; check current availability before traveling. A mountain trail also leads from the settlement of Artuch to Lake Chukurak. The lake is at 2,455 meters and is of glacial origin. There are no shops in the mountains around it, so bring enough water and food.

The Kulikalon Lakes were formed by melting glaciers and are part of a unique ecosystem. The Kulikalon lake system includes the high-altitude glacial lakes Dushokha, also known as Maria’s Eyes, below the Maria Glacier. They are included in trekking routes through the Kulikalon Basin.

The Allo Lakes offer a different landscape feature: Bolshoe Allo lies at about 3,150 meters and is surrounded by glaciated mountains and alpine meadows. Maloye Allo has a distinctive green hue because its water is filtered through a five-kilometer-long rockslide from nearby Bolshoe Allo. Maloye Allo is accessible only on foot via a potentially challenging trail through mountain valleys and forests. Lake Bibijanat is also accessible only on foot and is usually visited as part of multi-day treks through the Fann Mountains.
