Botanical gardens, religious sites and historic places give the Western Province its distinctive character. In Gampaha, the journey leads to a unique garden story: Henarathgoda Botanic Gardens was established in 1876 to introduce rubber to Sri Lanka. Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens, in turn, was established as Sri Lanka’s first botanical garden devoted exclusively to conserving wet-zone flora. These different focuses make the province interesting to travelers looking to include nature and culture in their plans.

Botanical Gardens and Natural Areas

Henarathgoda’s plant collection includes around 2,000 species from Sri Lanka and other countries. The history of the railway is also present in the area: the old Henarathgoda Railway Station is preserved as a site of historical archaeological significance. Henarathgoda Botanic Gardens is about 450 meters from Gampaha Railway Station—a useful point of reference for anyone including this garden in their travel plans.

Other natural areas in the Western Province include Muthurajawela Marshland, which is part of a 6,000-hectare reserve, and Horagolla Forest Reserve, the country’s smallest forest reserve. The two names refer to different protected areas, so when planning your trip, it is worth considering each as a separate destination rather than grouping them together as a single nature experience.

Temples, Museums and Architectural History

The cultural sites also differ in their themes and histories. The Colombo National Museum was established in 1877 as Sri Lanka’s first national museum. The grounds of Gangaramaya Temple include a museum and a library. Kelaniya Temple is dedicated to the Buddha’s third and final visit to Sri Lanka; Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara also features paintings and sculptures by Solias Mendis. These places bring together institutional history, religious significance and art, without limiting a visit to just one of these aspects.

Another historic stop is Richmond Castle on Kalutara-Palatota Road. It stands on a 42-acre estate. Mangosteen is also associated with the Kalutara region. Visitors interested in architecture or regional connections will find different points of interest here than at the museums and temples in Colombo and Kelaniya.

Parks, Public Spaces and Event Dates

Viharamahadevi Park includes a mini-zoo and a children’s play area. Its open-air stadium serves as a venue for concerts and public events. Another historic public space is Galle Face Green, which has been used for cricket, kite flying and walks.

Two annual dates are relevant when planning around religious festivals: the Kelaniya Duruthu Perahera takes place every year on the January full-moon Poya day; the Gangarama Nawam Maha Perahera is held annually in February. Check the specific event dates if you plan to time your trip around them. The Esala procession of Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya usually features drummers, dancers, decorated elephants and trumpeters.

The region’s history of sport is also part of its story: the Royal Colombo Golf Club was founded in 1880 and is Sri Lanka’s oldest golf club. When choosing a hotel location, first decide whether botanical collections and natural areas, museums and temples, or a particular event will be the main focus of your stay. Gampaha, Colombo, Kelaniya and Kalutara offer different location options. Check the specific hotel addresses against the places you want to visit, and choose your base according to your travel plans.
