Ella: Train, highland climate and hiking destinations
Accommodation in Ella
When looking for a hotel in Ella, you can first consider whether the town suits your travel plans: its elevation, railway and hiking destinations each shape a different aspect of your stay. Nearby structures also offer a reason to take a closer look at Ella as a travel destination.
Elevation and railway
Because of its elevation, Ella has a cooler climate than the surrounding lowlands. The town is also on the railway through the Hill Country, a few stops from Badulla, near the end of the line. These two features help place Ella within the region: one through its contrast with lower-lying towns, the other through its position on the railway line.
Hiking destinations around Ella
Mini Adams Peak is a hiking destination in Ella. You can also combine a hike to Ella Rock with a possible starting point at Ella railway station. From there, the first part of the route follows the railway on foot; during the climb that follows, you pass a waterfall, a rubber tree forest and tea plantations. Allow about four hours in total for the ascent and descent of Ella Rock.
Ravana Cave is nearby. The challenging climb includes around 650 uneven, sometimes steep steps. In some places, the route climbs steep rocks without steps. If you plan this excursion, check the trail conditions before your visit: they can change.
Structures and scenery nearby
Ravana Falls are about seven kilometres from Ella Town and are part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary. The Nine Arch Bridge is located between Ella and Demodara railway stations. Its large arches curve toward the mountains; it is considered an engineering masterpiece of the early 20th century.
Another nearby railway structure is the Demodara Loop, a spiral railway line considered an engineering masterpiece. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to drive there from Ella; journey times may vary. A walking route along the railway line also leads to Demodara. The time estimates refer to different parts of the itinerary: for Ella Rock, the ascent and descent; for the Demodara Loop, the drive from Ella.
The two railway structures have different highlights: the Nine Arch Bridge is notable for its large arches and location between the railway stations, while the Demodara Loop stands out for its spiral route. This lets you distinguish between two different forms of railway architecture in the area around Ella. Together with the hiking destinations, they offer concrete points to consider when deciding whether Ella suits the focus of your trip.
