The Badulla District is part of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Waterfalls, highland landscapes, bridges, and religious sites offer a range of different highlights. If you’re looking for hotels for a stay in Badulla, first consider whether nature, architectural history, or religious heritage should take center stage on your trip. This makes it easier to choose your destination based on the interests you’d most like to focus on during your stay.

Waterfalls and landscapes

Bambarakanda Falls is in Badulla District and, at 263 meters, is Sri Lanka’s highest waterfall. Dunhinda Falls is also in the district; it plunges 64 meters into a natural pool. These figures provide two different points of comparison: Bambarakanda is notable for its drop, while Dunhinda is characterized by the combination of its height and natural pool. In Uva Province, an approximately one-kilometer footpath leads to Dunhinda Falls. Along the way, visitors can spot wild birds, butterflies, monkeys, and deer.

Another type of landscape can be found at Nildiya Pokuna. The site is located in an inner cave complex within the Ravana-Ella Sanctuary in Badulla District. In August 2026, the commencement of tourist activities there under the supervision and regulation of the Department of Wildlife Conservation was announced. If you’re planning to visit Nildiya Pokuna, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Ella and bridges

Ella is surrounded by hills with cloud forests and tea plantations, and offers opportunities for hiking. Nine Arch Bridge is located in Ella, in Badulla District. This railway bridge spans a forested valley with nine stone arches. It allows the structure itself to take center stage in your trip planning: the valley, the stone arches, and its function as a railway bridge together describe the structure.

Bogoda Bridge offers a different architectural highlight. It is made of wood and is believed to date from either the Gampola or Kandy period. Its tiled roof protected the bridge’s wooden roadway structure. The Department of Archaeology fully restored the bridge to its former lines and levels. Both the roof design and its historical dating—which is explicitly uncertain—are therefore part of its history; the restoration describes a completed undertaking.

For a broader view of Uva Province, Ella Gap offers vistas across Sri Lanka’s southern plains. This landscape view adds a wide-ranging perspective to the immediate sights around Ella. Together with the hills, cloud forests, and tea plantations, it creates a distinct landscape focus alongside the waterfalls and structures.

Religious sites and cultural heritage

Muthiyangane Raja Maha Viharaya is located in Mahiyanganaya in Badulla District, near the Mahaweli River, and is considered one of Sri Lanka’s 16 sacred sites. Its location in Mahiyanganaya and its religious significance give this site a different character from the district’s natural and architectural attractions. For travelers wishing to include religious sites in their selection, it is therefore a clearly defined highlight.

Near Haputale, in Badulla District, Adisham Bungalow is a country house that is home to the Monastery of St. Benedict at Adisham. The country house and monastery together shape the site’s identity. Check current visiting arrangements before planning a visit.

Uva Province in a wider context

Beyond Badulla, Uva Province provides a regional context for further cultural and landscape themes. Sri Lanka’s Tea Cultural Landscape is a proposed tea-producing cultural landscape located partly in Uva and Central Provinces. The proposal is on the UNESCO Tentative List; this is not the same as being inscribed as a World Heritage Site. The components mentioned include tea plantations, factories, plantation bungalows, churches, and Hindu shrines. Railway infrastructure along the Main Line is also part of the description; this line runs through Badulla. This regional perspective is distinct from the individual sites in the district and can complement your interests in landscapes, culture, and architecture.
