Explore Uiwang-si through a range of themes: Korean railway history, a traditional temple, mountain views, bird ecology and rail biking. If you’re looking for a hotel in Uiwang-si, these highlights can help you choose a focus for your stay. Each place offers a distinct perspective on history, landscape or nature.

Railway history at the Railway Museum

The Railway Museum presents the history of railways in South Korea as an educational experience. Its nine registered cultural properties include the President’s salon car and the staff car of the commander of the UN forces stationed in Korea. The two vehicles represent different roles and functions in railway transport.

The outdoor grounds add another dimension, with an exhibition of around 2,600 real railway vehicles. The museum brings together the historical development of railways and a wide range of actual vehicles. Visitors interested in technology or transport history will find both the broader context and individual, named cultural properties to explore.

Temple and architectural history at Cheonggyesan

Cheonggyesa Temple is located at 475 Cheonggye-ro in Uiwang, on the middle slope of Cheonggyesan. It is a traditional temple and is designated as a cultural heritage property of Gyeonggi-do Province. The site therefore combines a religious tradition with a specific mountainside location.

Two buildings on the temple grounds have different historical associations. A memorial stele erected in 1689 commemorates the temple’s history and is designated as a cultural heritage property of Gyeonggi-do Province. Geungnakbojeon Hall is thought to date from the late Joseon period. The stele’s precise year of construction is therefore known, while the hall’s dating is explicitly an estimate. If you’re interested in temple history and historic architecture, this difference offers a specific reason to consider the two buildings separately.

Mountain views and a route to Wangsong Lake Park

Moraksan, which is 385 meters high, offers summit views of Uiwang, Anyang, Gunpo, Gwacheon and Seoul. The panorama brings several named places into view at once. This is a different landscape focus from Cheonggyesa’s architectural history: here, the emphasis is on the view from the summit.

There is a specific wayfinding detail for reaching Wangsong Lake Park on foot: the park is about a 20-minute walk from Exit 1 of Uiwang Station on the line toward Suwon. This information refers to that exit and the walk. It can help with planning if you’re combining a visit to the park with travel via the station.

Bird ecology and rail biking

The Uiwang Bird Ecology Science Museum focuses on natural ecology and the birds that breed at Wangsong Lake. Visitors can learn about these topics, observe birds and experience ecology firsthand. The museum opened on April 24, 2012. Telescopes for birdwatching are available on its rooftop terrace, which also offers views of the surrounding landscape. Looking through a telescope and taking in the view from the terrace complement the museum’s focus on birds.

Uiwang Rail Park is the first rail-bike park with a route that circles a lake near Seoul. The park includes a photo area, a bird habitat area and a speed course. The two attractions offer distinctly different ways to engage with nature: the museum focuses on learning about, observing and experiencing bird ecology, while the rail park features a circular route and three named areas. When planning your trip, you can choose between an interest in natural history and an activity on rail bikes.

Together, these places reveal different sides of Uiwang-si: railway history and vehicles, temple and architectural history, views from Moraksan, and bird ecology at Wangsong Lake. When choosing a focus for your stay, consider which of these themes matters most to you.
